Bittersweet.
Natalie rubbed her hands over her eyes, locking the door behind her. She shifted Amber's lavender carseat to her other arm to switch on the light. She had just returned from the clinic, where Evan had taken her after the episode in the kitchen. They had given her stronger medication that wouldn't harm Amber, and they sent her home with instructions of bedrest and fluids.
She smiled as Amber opened her eyes with a small noise, the infants eyes taking on a pale green hue. Natalie loved her daughter, but every now and then she would do something that looked just like Noah. She still had his number, and she wondered about calling him sometimes, but was scared that he had found someone else, or that he still wouldn't want Amber. She pulled Amber and her newfound stuffed pink dinosaur and went to lay her in the small playpen that rested on the floor.
Just before she loosened her grasp, the doorbell rang. Natalie reversed, pulling the infant to her chest and resting her on her hip, and sashayed to the front door, checking her reflection in the mirror by the closet.
She winced, catching her ghostly pale complextion in the lamplight. Her lips matched her skin, and her cheekbones sunk into her face, causing deep shadows and lines in her slender face. A light sheen of sweat glimmered across her whole body, matching the feverish glitter in her gold-brown eyes. She licked her lips, trying to add color, but nothing changed. She wrapped a thick sweatshirt around her frame, as she felt the temperature drop a few degrees. She shiften Amber to the other hip and smiled, answering the door.
There stood Mrs. Mackey, who stared down at the welcome mat in front of the thin metal door. "Hey there," Natalie smiled, and Mrs. Mackey looked up with a smile, which faltered only for a moment as she took in her students sickly appearance. She blinked and smiled again, handing Natalie a file full of school work. "These are some of the papers that you'll need right up untill you return." she smiled, nodding at Amber and smiling wide. She'd never seen the baby girl before, and Natalie grinned as Amber made little sounds.
She thanked her teacher and layed Amber in her playpen, where she happily played with the few plastic toys that Natalie could afford. Natalie smiled at the file of schoolwork and realized she missed school and her friends. She wanted to know what was new, and she thought suddenly of her other teacher, Mrs. Howards. She wondered if she too had given birth to her child, and how she was doing. She smiled, eyeing Noah's number once more.
Perhaps she would visit the school tomorrow. She smiled and began on her schoolwork.
