There are three kinds of people who survive in Monster Gulch. People who become scavengers, people who become bandits, and people who become something else entirely.
Anyone who is in the Gulch by choice is either suicidal or looking for something worth at least their life. The rest were banished here. Not only is the gulch full of monsters, as its name suggests, but there is no known way out. Nobody has ever found an end, and anyone who has tried to climb out has found that no matter how high you climb, you can never reach the top.
The days in the gulch consist of people trying to survive any way they can. Resources are scarce and no one can be trusted. During the nights, however, people take shelter from the monsters who come out to roam in the darkness. Anyone stuck in the open likely won't last to see the morning.
You wont last long alone, but groups larger than two or three very rarely last long without betrayal taking its cassualties. True trust is a valuable, rare, and very necessary thing needed for survival in the gulch. Making friends is essential. Making enemies is inevitable.
