A Dark Confession: Part 1

Montclaire Estate - Highholm
October 6 - Morning

Beams of light shot through the window onto Emily's pale face. She groaned as she turned over in bed. The morning had come too quick yet again. Although her body was healing well, her left arm was still in a sling. She rolled up to a sitting position and shook a blanket off. A yawn took over her face.

There was a light knock at the door.

"Come in," Emily said.

The door opened and a smiling Tate waltzed in. He brought a tray of coffee and pastries. Her eyes widened at the breakfast prospects.

"You know, a girl could get used to this."

"I know. I'm just glad the hospital let you continue the rest of your care here. You'll be safe here, Emily. Your doctor will be here every day to help you through physical therapy."

She put her hand up. "I know, Tate, I know. Isn't this like the third morning in a row you've told me all that?"

He shrugged. "You're right. I'm being too obsessive. I just really care about you."

"I know you do. I really appreciate all that you've done for me. But you realize that sooner or later, I need to get back to my home and work. As soon as I'm physically ready, I have to go back."

He nodded as he sat down beside her. Emily picked at a cherry pastry and sipped on some coffee.

"Ohh that's good, real good.. My goodness, do you get coffee like this everyday?"

"Yes, my father has stores of it saved up. My sisters drink it more than I do, but I agree - it's real good."

"That's right, you do have sisters. The twins. I nearly forgot about them. Wait, don't tell me - do they know I'm staying here??"

Tate put his hand on her back in a calming manner.

"They're so busy with their lives, I don't think they've noticed or even care."

"But your father... what if he finds out?"

"He's so preoccupied with the Council these days. He's rarely ever here. Don't worry about him," Tate winked at her.

She took another bite of the pastry and winked back. Suddenly, a somber look washed over his face. He started breathing more rapidly.

"What is it?" She asked.

"Emily, there's something I have to tell you. Something I've never told anyone before."

A switch went off in her mind and she became instantly alert. She felt an anxiety creeping within. She set the remainder of her pastry back on the tray.

"Oh no, this can't be good. This is never good. Why would you say that, Tate? Why? Everything is just fine right now...and if you tell me whatever it is you have to tell me.."

"It's just that- I care for you deeply, Emily. I've never felt this way before about anyone. I never thought I could share myself with anyone. I have to tell you this because you mean a lot to me."

Emily leaned back and glanced up at the ceiling, hoping for some way out of this situation.

"Do you understand why I have to make this confession to you?"

She turned and stared deep into his eyes. She tried to search his soul with her gaze. He returned a gaze that was equally as fierce. Seconds ticked by and neither spoke a word. Silence. She opened her mouth to respond and the door burst open. Serenity barged into the room wearing a fancy tea hat and sundress.

"My my, what do we have here? Brother, why haven't you introduced me to your secret lover?"

Tate scratched his head with a puzzled look on his face. Emily chuckled and breathed a sigh of relief. Then she extended her hand toward Serenity.

"Hi, I'm Emily."
