Round 3: The Unartifact

Time to begin round 3 of the writing prompt competition! This time it's a fairly tried and true classic, so bonus points for originality and not going the "becomes god-emperor" or "is burned as a witch" routes.
The new prompt:
A time traveller has lost a piece of technology in a pre-renaissance century. What happens when it's found?
