Jago shot first and the guy he dubbed Rottooth went down with a smoking hole in his chest.

Carnes watched as the captain removed the head of the snake. A tactically sound move, he thought to himself, especially when the enemy is a little organized band of toughs. With their leader felled, this mob could react with confusion, their disorganization buying precious seconds to build on the advantage of surprise. Jago hadn’t fired again. Carnes’ hand gripped his own gun, but in this split second he thought it wise to follow the captain’s play. They may give it up, he thought.

Charles eyed his nearest target and launched himself.

He saw the man lunge, and watched the blessed confusion evaporate. So much for wishful thinking, Jared swivelled the horse left as he drew his pistol.
