Manipulating space and time, Dr. Strange traveled to the past to warn the Avengers of the upcoming Infinity War and more importantly, how it would end in disaster for everyone. In an attempt to prevent Thanos from destroying half the multiverse population, Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch) performed a reality warping spell of epic proportion, but the magic was not stable because Wanda herself was unstable.

In our timeline, not all events depicted in the House of M series/storyline occurred. Wanda Maximoff was a troubled individual and had undergone the loss of her twins and she did decimate nearly the entire mutant and enhanced population on Earth and across the multiverse, but not by design. The spell failed to achieve its intended effect. Instead of depowering mutants and the Infinity stones, they disappeared completely in an instant; in a poof.

If there was one redeeming facet of Wanda's spell - it was never intended to affect the children and that much seemed to have gone right. To be sure there were a few adult mutants and Enhanced who managed to escape the effects of the spell, but it is now fifteen years later and the world is more dangerous than ever for the children left behind charged with its defense. It was a bad time to be a hero.
