Once More With Feeling...

OFF: Zuzu we salute you!!

ON: Aji sat bolt upright. The red alert klaxon was sounding, and she had been sleeping through it? Throwing aside her covers she glanced through the window and...sang!?

“When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires will come to you.”

Aji brought her hand to her mouth, her eyes wide. She was not so much shocked by the impromptu singing as she was the blue birds flying around outside her window. She shook her head and blinked. No they were still there!

“Computer?” she called out, relieved that the words did not come out in song, “Why are we at red alert?”

THE ENDEAVOR IS CURRENTLY ENGAGED IN COMBAT WITH THE BORG, ALL SENIOR STAFF ARE CALLED TO BATTLE STATIONS

“Shit!” Aji cried as she leapt from her bed and clawed on her uniform. She had to get to engineering. The Endeavor shook violently as she was struck by a powerful force and it was only her Tamian reflexes that kept her on her feet. She tapped her comm badge as she darted from the room.

“Aji to the bridge, I am heading to engineering.” there was a moments silence before the reply came.

“This is acting Captain Sh’viakrik. Where the hell have you been?”

“Dont know mam.” Aji replied, “It’s been a strange few days.”

“Isn't that the truth,” came the reply, “Well you are here now. We have engaged with the Borg and scans show boarding parties aboard the Endeavor. Get yourself to engineering, but be careful.”

Aji ran for the nearest turbo-lift and came to a screeching halt as the green glimmer of a Borg transporter beam delivered a troop of drones directly into her path. She stood frozen for moment as they turned as one and scanned her. Then it happened again…

Click! Did they? They clicked their fingers...and…

“Here come the Borg
Like a bat out of hell—
Someone gets in our way,
Someone don't feel so well!

Here come the Borg!
Little world, step aside,
Better go underground,
Better run, better hide!

We're drawin' the line,
We’re gonna make you utile!
We're bringing you in
And resistance is futile."

The Borg were singing? They were freaking clicking their fingers and singing. Aji turned tail and ran as fast as her Tamian legs would carry her. She plucked a tricorder from her belt and began to scan for anomalies as she made her way to the next lift. And Gods help her as she ran she sang!!

“Little ship
In a neutral system
Every day
Like none before
Little ship
Full of little people
Waking up to say”

Quarters opened up on ever side as the crew burst out to sing with her.

“Bonjour bonjour
Bonjour bonjour bonjour”

Look there she goes, that girl is strange, no question
Dazed and distracted, out of tune,
Never part of any crowd
'Cause her head's up on some cloud
No denying she's a funny girl D’moonh”

Clamping her jaws shut she threw herself into the next turbo-lift and gave the order to be transported to engineering. Alone for the moment she shook her head and tried to fathom what was happening. A Borg attack and everyone singing and dancing. One could argue that it was just an average day on the Endeavor of late, but still this was something new.

Stepping into main engineering she saw it was deserted. The ship lurched once more as battle with the Borg took its toll on the shields. She could see instantly that what ever was happening the Endeavor did not have long left. She could see scorch marks from weapons fire here and there, it appeared the Borg had already been on this deck.

She opened her mouth and then clamped it shut. Not again no she…

“Every single night
The same arrangement
I go out and fight the fight
Still I always feel
This strange estrangement
Nothing here is real
Nothing here is right
I’ve been making shows of trading blows
Just hoping no one knows
That I’ve been
Going through the motions
Walking through the part
Nothing seems to penetrate my heart!”

She sprang into action, giving herself to the bizarre music of the moment as she worked to give power to the shields and warp drive.

“Will it be this way forever
Trying to save the Endeavor
Should I pull this yellow lever…

I don’t want to be
Going through the motions
Losing the warp drive
I can’t even see, if this is really me
And I just want to be
Alive!”

Then it came to her. The box! A project long abandoned, but it just might save them. She scrambled over to the storage compartment just as Ensign McCree came burst out of the turbo lift.

“Borg!” he yelled, “Borg on the Endeavor. Just thought you ought to know.” and has his eyes locked with Ajis they rolled upwards and the man fainted.

“Typical.” she grimaced as she continued her search eventually dragging out a large storage container with the words, “In Case of Borg” labelled on the lid. She grinned down at what had once been a joke, as she opened the catches and flipped it open.
“Now that is a thing of beauty.” she whistled. She ran her hand along the smooth surface of the device and activated its main control panel.

“W...what is that?” McCree asked a few minutes later as he came around.

“Good. You are up.” Aji snapped, “No time to explain. I need you to hold things together down here while I get to a transporter pad.”

“Me? What… why? Where are you going?” McCree cried.

Aji grabbed his arms as the ship shook once more. A nearby control panel exploded in a shower of silver sparks. She looked the terrified ensign in the eyes and willed him to be calm. After a moment he gave a firm nod and he sang,

“Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by the rules
Of someone else's game.”

He stood and turned to the controls and began to work like a mad man to keep the Endeavor alive all the time continuing to sing.

“Too late for second guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes and leap”

“Good luck Ensign she’s all yours!” and with that Aji raced back to the turbo-lift listening as McCree sang at the top of his voice!

“It's time to try
Defying gravity
I think I'll try
Defying gravity
And you can't pull me down”

A body lay slumped over the the transporter controls. As gently as she could Aji pulled the crewman aside and jumped up to the stool to punch in her coordinates. Setting a brief delay in the timer she snatched up her device and hopped up onto the transporter pad. This was it. There was no coming back. She took a deep breath.

The golden haze of the transporter snatched her away and moments later she was standing on a large walkway deep inside the Borg cube. Drones walked by on every side but paid her no heed. She was unarmed and far too small to be a threat. The same could not be say for the invention she carried under her arm. She had gotten the idea following the battle of wolf 359. The idea of planting a command within the collective through a captured drone had been its inspiration and with the help of Eight of Eleven she had managed to refine the concept into this. A borg matrix interface designed to give one command and one command only… Self Destruct.

Her communicator came to life as she began to activate the transmitter, it was Zazi, “Aji what are you doing the computer says you have beamed aboard the cube?”

“I have a plan Captain!” she replied as she punched in the final sequence and waited for the device to patching in to the Borg consciousness.

“We need you here in Engineering.” Zazi said, “I am beaming you back.”

“Negative Captain. You need to let me do this it will work. McCree has everything in hand.”

“Lieutenant Commander I am ordering you to…”

“It’s too late.” Aji replied as she looked up to see the surrounding Borg all turned to face her. The device was working, any moment now. The Borg sang as one,

“Consider yourself at home.
Consider yourself one of the family.
We've taken to you so strong.
It's clear we're going to get along.
Consider yourself well in
Consider yourself part of the furniture.
There isn't a lot to spare.
Who cares?.What ever we've got we share!”

“Oh crap.” Aji slowly backed away as the drones advanced. The device patched in and they all stopped as one. There was a horrible moment when it seemed that nothing was going to happen and then...blinding white light.

ABOARD THE FESSARIUS

Balok cried out in a blind rage smashing an entire bottle of Tranya against the view screen. He jumped down from his seat and marched towards the exit. They had destroyed his pet cube. Damn them was there no end to their luck!! Even with the Aenar device randomly disrupting their sense of reality they had somehow managed to sneak aboard the cube and activate some kind of explosive device.
Marching into the stasis chamber he called out to the ships computer. “Did we get her? Please tell me we got her!”

LIEUTENANT COMMANDER AJI D’MOONH IS NOW HELD IN STASIS POD 10

“Good!” there is that at least. Balok walked over to the pod and peered in at the sleeping form of Aji D’moonh. Such a brilliant mind she must have to have invented such a device. Brilliant! And he would enjoy every moment it took him to dissect it.

***
Aji D’moonh was floating in a world of light and silence. She was still breathing and she was still thinking. So she was still alive? Her thoughts came slow and dream-like and her body it seemed was elsewhere. It was to her mind that the music came unbidden,

“Think of me, think of me fondly
When we've said goodbye
Remember me, once in a while
Please promise me you'll try
When you find that once again you long
To take your heart back and be free
If you ever find a moment
Spare a thought for me.”
