This is my Challenge Post!
[Holodeck Three - USS Endeavour]
Bolak sat in the captains seat perched atop several cushions. He toyed with his data pad reading the latest edition of Outpost 42. If all went well he would have to write to their editor Major Tom later that evening. This could be a newsworthy event! Peering around the bridge he surveyed his crew. A diminutive bunch drawn from the Federations fictional database. With a broad grin he leaned forward and pointed his finger at the currently blank view screen.
"Computer start programme." the bridge sprang into life, the displays lighting up and the crew taking their stations. Bolak sat back and spoke into the Captains comm panel.
"Captain's log, star date 48315.6 USS Endeavor on training mission to Gamma Hydra, Section fourteen, coordinates twenty-two eighty-seven four. Approaching Neutral Zone, all systems normal and functioning."
"Leaving Section Fourteen for Section Fifteen." reported ensign Samwise from the helm rubbing a tear from his eye.
"Is there a problem Ensign Gamgee? " Bolak asked.
"It's just if we travel one more light year, I'll be the farthest away from home I've ever been." Sobbed Sam.
"Come on, Sam." Bolak assured him, "Remember what Spock used to say: "It's a dangerous business, Bolak, going out your solar system. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no telling where you might be swept off to. Now, stand by. Project parabolic course to avoid entering Neutral Zone."
"Aye, Captain. ...Course change projected." Sam replied with renewed confidence.
"Bedeep bedeep bedeep! Captain, ...I'm getting something on the distress channel." chimed in Lieutenant Twiki from the Comm.
"On screen!" Ordered Bolak. The view screen blurred for a moment and then cleared to show an image of an alien bridge manned by a race of strange orange skinned aliens with bright green hair. They began to sing,
"Umpa Lumpa, doobadi doo, this is the Kobayashi Maru.
We hit a mine and now we're in the pooh, Umpa Lumpa, doobadi doo!"
"Bedeep bedeep bedeep! This is the USS Endeavour." replied Ensign Twiki. "Your message is breaking up. "Bedeep bedeep bedeep! Can you give your coordinates? Repeat. This is the Starship..." The aliens began to sing again,
"Umpa Lumpa, doobadi dee,
Gamma Hydra, Sub-section three."
"In the Neutral Zone." Gasped Bolak clutching his fist in consternation.
"Umpa Lumpa, doobadi doo,
Can you assist we really need you!"
Static filled the screen as Bolak accessed the computer "Data on Kobayashi Maru!" he requested.
"Subject vessel is third class neutronic fuel carrier, crew of eighty-one, three hundred passengers." came the report from the computer.
"Damn." Bolak cursed "Mister Gamgee, plot an intercept course."
"May I remind the Captain that one does not simply fly into the neutral Zone. Its black void is guarded by more than just mines. There is evil there that does not sleep.”
Bolak raised his eyebrows, "If you are quite finished Ensign. I'm aware of my responsibilities."
Sam blushed as he turned and punched the new coordinates into the helm, "Estimating two minutes to intercept. ...Now entering the Neutral Zone."
"Warning. We have entered the Neutral Zone. ...Warning." chimed in the ships computer.
“Captain Bolak must not go into to Neutral Zone!" cried Commander Dobby from the science station,“Captain Bolak must stay where he is safe. He is too great, too good, to lose. If Captain Bolak goes into the Neutral Zone, he will be in mortal danger.”
"Thank you for your concern Commander Dobby but we can not ignore our responsibilities."
"Of course Captain, Captain is so good and wise. Bad Dobby!" Dobby began to bang his head against the science station over and over.
Bolak tried to ignore the sound of Dobbys head striking the panel as he decided his next step, "Stand by transporter room, ready to beam survivors aboard."
"Bedeep bedeep bedeep! Captain, I've lost their signal!" Twiki announced.
"Alert!" the computer sounded, "Sensors indicate three Klingon Cruisers, bearing three one six, mark four, closing fast."
"Visual! ...Battle stations! Activate shields!" cried Bolak.
"Shields activated!" confirmed Samwise.
"Inform the Klingons we are on a rescue mission." Bolak leaned forward in excitement causing on of his cushions to slip. Grumbling under his breath he threw the other cushions to the floor and stood up on his chair.
"Bedeep bedeep bedeep! They're jamming all the frequencies, Captain." Twiki reported.
"Klingons on attack course and closing." warned the computer.
"We're in over our heads. Mister Gamgee, get us out of here." Bolak ordered.
“It's like the great stories, Mr. Bolak, the ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn't want to know the end because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad has happened?"
"Samwise?" Bolak cried out waiting for the helmsman to change course, but he Ensign seemed not to hear as he went on,
"But in the end, it's only a passing thing this shadow, even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines, it'll shine out the clearer. I know now folks in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't."
"Samwise I am ordering you to turn back now!"
"They kept going because they were holding on to something. That there's some good in this world, Mr. Bolak, and it's worth fighting for.”
"Commander Dobby take the helm!" Bolak ordered and the elf sprang into action knocking the Ensign aside.
"Commander Dobby will not let you down Sir!" cried the elf.
"Alert! Klingon torpedoes activated." came the final warning from the computer.
"Evasive action!" roared Bolak as a massive explosion rocked the bridge and threw him from his chair.
"Engineering! Damage report!" he called into the Comm. There was a moments static before the reply came,
"Noooooo Goooood. Phone home!"
"Engage auxiliary power. Prepare to return fire!" Bolak ordered as another blast tore through the ship.
A small green cadet piped up, "Hmm Captain! Down the shields are! Get out of here we must!"
"Fire all phasers!" Bolak roared in desperation.
"This is no power for the weapons, Captain. Dobby has failed the famous Captain Bolak. Bad Dobby, Dobby must be punished."
Another explosion and fire sprang up across the deck. Bolak ran to the helm and tried to take control and Commander Dobby pulled out his phaser and proceeded to shoot himself in the arm.
"Bad Dobby!" Zap! "Bad Dobby"
"Bedeep bedeep bedeep! Captain, it's no use. We're dead in space." cried Twiki as an explosion sent the robot hurtling across the bridge.
"Activate escape pods. Send out the Log Buoy. ...All hands abandon ship. Repeat, ...all hands abandon ship"
As the programme came to an end Bolak sat down on the floor exhausted. The door opened and Mr Mok stepped in warily.
"How did you do?" asked the Bolian.
"Terrible. We will not be making the front page today." Admitted Bolak, "I think the crew requires some... refinement."
