The Great Divide

The Well of Souls was a wretched place. That Nathan was absolutely certain of. In the mist incoherent whispers echoed ceaselessly and tormented the party as they pressed onward. Yet it was clear that the specters were all targeting their greatest fears and regrets.

Which was why it was no surprise to Nathan that he saw his ex, Shannon, appear in front of him. She had a venomous look on her face and she crossed her arms.

"You're pathetic." She hissed. "That's why I slept with him. I need a real man."

Nathan tried to ignore the ghostly image and pressed on. Yet the memory that had just replayed itself in front of him still had a sting to it.

Almost immediately Kara's voice spoke up. "Don't listen to her. This place is despair. Infectious. Don't fall prey to it."

Shannon appeared again. "I don't know what I ever saw in you. You're a fucking loser!"

Again, a replay of an old fight. The Fight. The one they had the night Nathan found out about her affair. For what seemed like hours the specter of Shannon hounded him with various insults from a night Nathan had struggled to try and forget. It was an old wound that had barely begun to heal before he got stuck in this world.

"You are going to die alone."

And now it had been ripped back open.

The mist seemed to engulf him, pulling him away from the group, from the road. He was lost in a world of grey.

"You are going to die alone." The sentence repeated endlessly. His heart felt like it had been raked by a set of claws, his soul plunged into a dark hole he knew all too well.

You are going to die alone...
You are going to die alone...
You are going to die alone...

But then he felt powerful arms embrace him. They held him tight to something warm.

"You are not alone." Kara's voice pierced the wall of darkness, yet her tone was tender and sweet. She held him close and whispered in his ear. "I'll never leave your side."

Still the despair was palpable, Nathan shook his head. "I'm useless... You'd be better off leaving me here."

Kara shushed him and held him tighter. "Never, love. Never. You're not useless. You've proven that already. You've proven your mettle as a warrior and a companion. In the face of death you held your ground. You've defended those who'd call you friend. You are brave, and loyal, and far cleverer than you think you are. And most importantly, you are mine. And I'll see the seas boil and the Gods turned to dust before I let you fall here."

Nathan felt the shadows retreat, and the specter of his crazy bitch of an ex-girlfriend retreated into the grey. Suddenly he was back on the road, a little behind the main group but it didn't take long to him to catch up with them.

Zahn was the first to notice this and nodded to the warrior woman as she rejoined the group. "Stick together, this place is perilous." The lost souls of the well were working their wicked ways.

Lucinda was quiet, which concerned Zahn as he knew she was now engrossed in some sort of negative introspection. He put his hand on her shoulder. "Don't dwell, my dear. Keep focused on our goal and we will be well away from here in due course."

Lucinda nodded, but he could tell she had been deeply disturbed by whatever phantasm had appeared to her.

Despair and sorrow were trying to seep its way in and undo them all. So Zahn began to sing the most uplifting song he could think of, his voice filling the gray void and, hopefully, filling the hearts of his new companions with some much needed hope.

Carry me all through the night
I am the last light fading
Leave all the lost souls behind
Show me the silence breaking
And when you're lost and out of time
I will be right here waiting
And when your dreams return to life
I'll be forever fading
And we'll fall behind

So I'll wait for you
As I keep your faith alive
And I'll pray for you
As we cross the great divide

Bury the wounds deep inside
Rupture the fault line breaking
Dream of the world left behind
Show us we're worth forsaking

And when the cold begins to rise
Darkness is overtaking
And when the fear is satisfied
I'll be forever changing
As we all realize

So I'll wait for you
As I keep your faith alive
And I'll pray for you
As we cross the great divide

And I'll break for you
As I open up the sky
And I'll stay for you
As we cross the great divide

Follow the sun light down
Cry clear and loud
Heaven won't help us now
But it's better this way
Warm light wash me away

So I'll wait for you
As I keep your faith alive
And I'll pray for you
As we cross the great divide

And I'll break for you
As I open up the sky
And I'll stay for you
As we cross the great divide
