A stormy night

Hyle got into his own bed, nice and cozy under the covers. A straw mattress was always a nice change from a bedroll.

“Well, goodnight then, my new friend. Sleep well,” he said, taking the lantern from the nightstand and blowing out the flame.

They were left in the dark, but the storm outside wasn't quiet. In some ways, the rain and the quiet dripping of the leaks was soothing. The distant rolling thunder was calm, but the closer strikes would pull Hyle from the edge of sleep now and then.

Eventually, he managed to fall into a deep enough sleep that the thunder couldn't pull him from it.
