The Nuts and Bolts of The Storm Syndicate

Agent Zero rounded a corner and stepped into a server room where Barbara Sanders was hard at work, much more comfortable working with technology than other people. Zero always felt a little guilty when he talked to her. She was a little timid to start with, and he figured his mask didn't help matters much. But no member of The Storm Syndicate had ever seen him without it. Ms. Sanders was no different.

"Barbara," Zero said, startling the young IT pro a little. "I don't want to distract you from your work, but I just wanted to tell you how important what you do really is. None of us are able to do our jobs without all of our systems running effectively. Whether it's monitoring the globe, or storing what we learn for easy reference, it matters. I feel like you don't hear that enough."

"Thank you, sir," Barbara said, adjusting her glasses. "I try to give my best, and serve the team as well as I can."

"Well, you do it very well.

Look, I need you to do me a favor. I was in the Ops Center a few minutes ago when I noticed a potential anomaly about four miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. It could possibly be a ship, but when I re-ran the tracking on it, it appears to originate further out in the Atlantic Ocean, not -- as one would expect -- from any coast.

It's not a submarine. As you know, we're able to track naval craft anywhere in the world. This concerns me a little, but I want your professional opinion before I dispatch a team to investigate. Can you have a report ready for me, say, in two hours?"

"Of course I can, chief."

"Excellent. I know I can always count on you. Two hours, please."

Zero exited via the same corridor he entered.
