Kali spent more her time doing small fixes to her fighter. Gideon had offered to have the Mech's help but she had refused politely. She liked to work the Gray Lady herself.
The ship had suffered some damage. The only part she could not fix immediately was the landing gear which would need to be totally replace.
She kept her eyes peeled from any message from Zedichez and the location of the auction. But nothing so far. So she threw herself into doing little jobs around the shuttle bay of the Dragonfly and fixed the little parts of her vessel she could to pass the time.
Her wound had healed completely now and she no longer need any pharma for the pain. In her down hours she would spend her her temporary quarters and some times talking with Walker in the galley over some food or coffee.
Gideon she hardly ever saw and quickly understood both men liked their solitude. They were a strange duo, and from what she gathered had not travelled together for long.
Both clearly were running from something. Trying to find something new to run towards.
Gideon was making a lot of progress repurposing parts of the Dragonfly to be more efficient and useful. Since he was the one doing all the work on the massive upgrade, Walker had no idea that he was practically getting a better ship than what he paid for. So far Gideon upgraded the wiring, computers, software, communications, shielding and weapons control. Apparently the old system had to many delays from bugs in the system which would cause a nightmare if not replaced. With the addition of the mechaniods Gideon was able to increase his workload since they were linked to his cybernetic links built into his body. Since he didn't trust Kali much he monitored her through the mechanoid sensors when she passed by them to make it less obvious. Luckily she seemed to have no bad intentions and spent more time with Walker.
Walker eventually started to ask her more about the auction and details of their commission Kali decided she should trust him and showed him the item she had been collecting from Dobu station.
One night when they were alone in the galley, she placed a square lacquered electric blue box, 20 centimetres across.
"Took me a long time to find these." she said opening the box. Inside it 2 oval like polished stones, with blue and black swirling colours. They were small enough to fit in the palm of ones hand.
"They are called the Agax Twins." she started. "No one knows where they come from and I have found records of their presence across several civilisations in the last aeon."
"What do they do?" Walker asked looking at the hypnotic swirling colours that waned and waxed.
"They were used for long distance communication. If you hold one stone here and another being holds its twin, no matter where you are in the galaxy, you can communicate telepathically."
Walker raised his eyebrows. "You jest, surely?"
Kali smiled. And handed Walker on of the stones. He took it gingerly. She grinned at his disconfort.
Kali picked up the twin stone and closed her eyes.
~Don't drop it...~ she thought into his mind.
Walker eyes widen and placed the stone back in its box.
"That was weird." he drank the rest his coffee smiling nervously. "That must be priceless."
"Everything has a price." she closed the box and put it away. "This will be my last card at the auction.
"What could be worth such a treasure?" Walker asked genuinely curious.
She locked eyes with her saviour.
"A fragment of the Atlas..." she whispered almost as if in pray.
Gideon paused when he heard Kali say "A fragment of the Atlas..." over the com link in his head. He stopped working on his project as he took a deep breath and sighed. He realized this was a taboo topic. Granted he was not up to date on the entire Atlas topic, but he knew it was something his mentors wanted to hide from the universe. It was dangerous and to much responsibility to be left to pirates and thieves. He put his spanner away as he rubbed his temples to ease his stress. The memory flashback was somewhat overwhelming as it overloaded his brain. He was glad he didn't trust Kali and decided to spy on her to get this information. Even if she was paying top dollar he had no intentions of letting anyone take that fragment away if he could avoid it. He was going to have to switch it with a fake or copy and delete the the original at some point without being noticed. As he ran several scenarios in his mind he rubbed his temples. Then he was interrupted by an incoming message.
+++Incoming Transmission... Source Unknown...+++
"Greetings. I am Zendichez. Your down-payment to attend our upcoming gathering has been received and processed. Your place at the auction is now secure and you will find encrypted with this message, coordinates to where we will meet.
You have 5 Sols to reach us, as we will not be staying in the same place for security reasons. A reminder that while aboard my space station a strict code of behavior is expected and any deviation from it will be severely punished.
No violence will be tolerated. Any attempt to interfere with the station systems or the auction itself will be dealt with extreme prejudice.
I hope to see you all soon. Don't tardy."
Gideon recorded the message into his staff and played it in his head several times till he memorized every sentence. He was not familiar with the person named Zendichez who sent the message. Judging by the seriousness of the message Zendichez came off as very intelligent and dangerous. He was going to have to show extreme caution while acquiring the Atlas fragment.
Not long after Walker contacted Gideon through the coms and told him about the message. Gideon then acted a bit surprised by the message before he made his way to the cockpit and set an ideal course to their destination after decoding the message. Kali tried to start a conversation as Gideon answered her with single responses as usual while doing a systems check on the ship. Granted he was polite as he spoke to her he was not the type to divulge much information. When he asked her what she was trying to obtain she hesitated and looked at Walker before he nodded at her that it was okay. Then she reluctantly told Gideon she was after the Atlas fragment and he gave her a puzzled look to see if she was serious. He then questioned why she would want something like that. He continued his systems checks as he waited to see if Kali would volunteer any additional information as their ship headed to the final destination at an ideal course and speed.
