Hellhounds vs. The Storm part 2

Vas nodded, trading out for an Anchor-9 tranq. “Lead the way, oh brave and powerful meat shield.”

Nate moved, and the others fell into formation around him, Jai to his right, his rifle hanging low, but ready. Vas to his left, and Rey covering their six. Behind them, the facility was quickly disappearing behind them.

Nate slowed, crouching near a cluster of wind-scoured rocks. He brushed away a layer of powdery snow with a gloved hand. “Tracks,” he said, mostly to himself. At least it looked like they were going the right way,

Jai tilted his head. “You hear that?” He asked. Everyone fell silent, for a moment hearing only wind. Then, the low and distant sound of thunder. “In a snowstorm?” He asked. Another rumble rolled across the sky.

Nate scanned the horizon. Lightning flashed somewhere far ahead, briefly illuminating the jagged silhouette of the coast. “Whoever it is, we’re getting close. Double time people.”

The squad moved in line, tranq guns up, and eyes scanning ahead, and the crackle and boom of lightning strikes shook the nearby trees. The closer they go, the stronger the smell of ozone and the ting of something singed grew stronger.

They found cover behind a collapsed wall. Vas used a mirror from his pocket to get a glimpse over the wall.

Nate could feel the static prickling along his skin as the air charged with unnatural electricity. “Visual?” He asked Vas.

Two figures stood at the edge of the frozen shoreline. A young girl, bundled in a coat too thin for the harsh weather that surrounded them, Her blonde braids whipped around her face as lightning crackled in the sky above her. Next to her stood a boy, tall, lean and silver haired, his hands on the girl’s shoulders as he tried to keep her calm.

Vas motioned quickly. Two. One male. Teen. Unknown. One female. Pre Teen. Suspected Meta.

With no idea what the boy could do, he didn’t want to chance that they could be overheard talking.

Everything in their training pointed to the next steps, advance, subdue, extract, but they were going in mostly blind. The storm clouds were telling that one of them was an electric wielder of sorts. The other - if they had any powers at all - was still a wildcard.

Nate peered around the wall, exhaling slowly. Lightning surged violently over their heads, thunder rumbling with each ragged breath the girl took. The boy spoke to her in Russian, soothingly, his voice calm and even, though his hands on her shoulders shook, either from the cold, fear or something else entirely. The girl wasn’t controlling the storm, rather it looked like she was barely containing it.

“Going to try reasoning,” Nate advised. “Make sure you avenge me or I will haunt your asses.”

“You all heard him I get his brownie if he dies.” Vas smirked.

Rey snorted, taking position to track the girl, Jai tracking the boy.
