Migration

Odsier Range

The tribes of of Eastern Plains of Arcadia and their herds have moved from north to south in fall and returned when spring rains brought fresh grass to the northern part of their ranges, for thousands of years. Hers of caribou, deer and horses have always formed the cultural backbone of their way of life. Usually the more cattle under their control the more powerful that tribe would be.

With the coming of the spring rains and the warmer weather the tribes moved from the southern pastures back to the northern ranges. The smaller tribes and those that mainly controlled horses were always the first to leave. For those watching at first it was like a dribble of animals and people but soon they moved in herds so dense that any animal encountered was either trampled or forced along with the herd. These huge migrations often resulted in enormous losses from starvation, drowning, or disease—natural methods for controlling overpopulation. And those dead animals not slaughtered for meat, hides and bones would have a considerable ecological impact feeding other wild life common to the Plains.

The tribes followed the seasonal grazing and migration of the herds the herds supplied everything they needed for everyday life, such as food, cups, decorations, crafting tools, knives, and clothing. The natives often warred against one other for resources and prestige, except during the Long Trek where the tribes would celebrate the coming of Spring as the manifestation of Erewhon's breath blowing life back into the land...

During this time the tribes would meet with allies, each would often be along blood ties and afforded their leaders the opportunity to meet to make political decisions, plan movements, arbitrate disputes, and organize and launch raiding expeditions or war parties on their enemies in the Fall.
