The Figure: Memories of a Cliff

The Figure took a rare opportunity to sleep, and with sleep came dreams, with dreams came a swirling torrent of questions and answers. He rarely dreamed of things from happier times, those were precious and rare. Tonight he dreamed of another temple, hidden secrets and unanswered questions of purpose. He stood on a cliff, tall dew covered grass slapped at his knees and coat as he hiked up the steep incline. He could feel it on the breeze. A massive storm was going to roll over the land soon and he needed to move with haste if he didn’t want to be caught in a downpour, or worse. Standing on the edge of the shale cliff the waves below slammed the stone causing sprays that almost reached the top of the cliff. And in those moments the waves surged forward and pushed back, he could see for just a brief moment the sharp geometric edges of the obsidian temple. The strangest thing, was the lack of any life, living on the structure. Not even the smallest bit of coral, or algae not as though it couldn’t but as if it avoided it at all costs. The other odd thing about this particular temple was it lacked the same feeling in the air the others did, while the shape and otherworldlyness of the architecture still made The Figure’s skin crawl, it lacked the same sinister feeling the others possessed, it felt for a lack of a better word ‘dead’. Or perhaps ‘inactive’ would be a better description, similar to a volcano, like at any moment it could awaken from its slumber and do whatever these structures were created to do. Thought that was still a mystery The Figure had yet to solve. This was not the first time he’d come to this place. He’d once come when the water was calm, that had not yielded any results. The water was too dark to have seen anything that day, and if not for the roiling sea today he’d have equally had no visibility today as well. Despite its inactivity this led The Figure to a hypothesis. That the activation of these ‘temples’ as he’d chosen to call them, were what killed the universes he’d visited. He didn’t know how, he didn’t even have a theory for that yet, but it made a sort of sense to him, all the place where they carried the sinister air, caused earthquakes, caused said universes Weave ley lines to quiver like a plucked lute string, those places suffered some catastrophe that ended them, even if life was still viable, and existed they were dying worlds simply on triage. It was only a matter of time. This gave The Figure a new idea, maybe just maybe the temples came first. And the world grew from them and maybe the Void he called home had its temple activate before the world sprouted, or maybe it was a dud from the start. World without a chance. But how would he find his world’s Temple. It could be infinite and he’d have not idea which direction to start looking. And that’s when The Figure awoke, making notes of his dream.
