18: Moonstone

Emma had been impressed when her son had insisted on a rescue pet instead of a puppy or a kitten. Emma was forty years old now, she had been married once but that had been a mistake, at the time she had been happy there had been no children. She had remedied that three years ago when she had Joshua. Some called him precocious, Emma knew he was just smart.
They had been past all the pens with the dogs in, whilst Joshua had been taken with all the animals none had quite clicked with him. Mind you Emma was certain given the chance Joshua would have taken home every single one.
Emma walked slowly along the glass fronted pens, there was something about the indifferent air your average cat Emma found… relatable. She had reached the end of the side she was on and turned to see Joshua sat cross legged by one of the pens. Crouching behind her son she saw a good sized cat, it was an unusual colour. But Emma’s great Aunt Lucille had been the stereotypical mad old cat woman. She had had lilac cats and Emma knew there were at least a dozen breeds that had the colouration.
“Moonstone.”
“What was that Josh?” she asked. Emma was certain he had found his pet.
The little blond head turned to his mother and he repeated the word.
“Is that what you want to call it?”
Joshua shook his head. “That’s what she calls herself.”
Emma smiled. “Do you want Moonstone Josh?”
He nodded and kept noodling his fingers against the glass, having got the cat’s attention.
“I will go and get the paperwork started.” She ruffled her son’s hair and left him sat there.
