Financial Education

JP with Omni and Lorem:

“Gonyaul!” Voah chided him. She was stupefied.

“I don’t understand… This amount of charity is unsustainable. We have next to nothing. Why?”

Gonyaul’s good cheer was punted over the horizon and left confusion across his gaze. If he was a dog his tail would have went between his legs. Had he not just done a good thing? He was speechless in that moment for a few reasons: One, he didn’t understand how it was unsustainable. He planned to get more in the future. Two, if people only gave when it was convenient, it would happen much less frequently. And third, did not Memeptah and her two kids need it more? He could have kept going with this inner dialogue, adding to the growing list of justification; however, he felt like Voah was about to teach him something. He remained quiet and actively listened, before responding to anything, because it was very likely she knew something he didn’t.

With that, she realized that he really didn’t understand money. It made sense. Why would a small self sustained group of people in isolation use money? She would have to instruct him on these matters of city life. It was different than foraging, hunting, and living off the land. Sure there were charities, favors, and connections, but coinage and bartering was necessary in a larger economy. Those without coin were slaves or beggars and neither of those were good positions to be in society. They were outcasts as well and Voah was already a target.

They discussed the differences in their childhood economic lifestyles as they headed to the north part of town.
