*Backstory* Flight form Titan: Part 5 - Aftermath

How long she was unconscious for, Jessie never knew. When she woke, the
pain in her leg had faded to a dull ache, so she got up and limped into
the midsection to find the first-aid kit.
Removing what remained of her trouser leg proved difficult, not just
because it hurt, but because in some places it had actually fused to her
skin. Eventually, though, she managed it, and gritting her teeth, started
smearing burn cream on the injury. That would definitely leave a scar.
Which, she realised as she bandaged it, would remind her of what had
happened – and what she had lost – for the rest of her life. Remembering
it at last, Jessie reached into her pocket and pulled out the box Nick
had given her. There was no need to open it, as she knew what it
contained, but she did anyway. Tears filled her eyes as the emerald ring
(“To match your eyes,” she fancied she heard him say) sparkled at
her.
Her injured leg would heal, given time, but it was unlikely that her
broken heart ever would.
