Past Evils

Kline took a deep drink of the ale. Slowly he turned to face Kalena. He looked her over as if to measure her as she spoke, it would have worked too, if he did not see he with a sword in hand. How she danced through the enemy and moved like a mongoose killing cobras. He might have really though she was the little lily she was acting to be if he did not know there was something else.

He watched her have her hand cleaned and nodded. “I will take you up on that massage, I could use it, the ground was not the softest last night.” He said and took another drink. “You know why I am a Baron?” He said and set aside the empty mug.

“I killed a general, one who was talented and clever, and could see what to do on the battle field clearer then any of Dalen’s generals.” He looked at Kalena, his eyes were focused and his voice steady and firm. “I had one of my men sneak behind the lines and travel to his home. There they lightly poisoned his children, making them sick. When he got word of this he took a unit of men and started to rush back to his home.” He took a breath. “He had to leave the bulk of his men at the lines, but he loved his family, so he could not stay. It was not his nature.”

He stepped closer to Kalena. “I used that to get him away from his forces, then my band and I we ambushed him. We focused the force of our attack on him and got his head. The bounty was that land and title. It was a butchery, we…” He paused.

“I did what needed to be done.”

He nodded his head. “I should go see about that bath now.” He gave her a formal bow and headed to the baths.
