01.22: Questions - Jamie Braddock

I found it hard to believe that this young woman was worried about Jack’s car seat. The chances were she was merely trying to get a handle on the world, I supposed. As little as I knew of this situation her own circumstances must have left her completely bewildered.
“Really?” I said. “You are apologising for bleeding after being assaulted? Your brother really did a number on you. You have nothing to be sorry for in any of this. Not a thing. There are plenty of ways to get a car seat clean. So don't worry about it.”
We drove for a little more, I could sense she was eager to know more but this had to come in her own time, not mine.
"Who are you people… really?"
I knew Jack was listening in on a secure link from his car ahead of us. Her sense of relief at being rescued was palpable and she had no desire to go back, so I decided on honesty.
“I am Jamie Braddock, you can tell from my accent I am British. Three years ago I found out I was a mutant, my gift is telepathy. I’m not that good at it yet but I am working on it. I was sent to a place here in the US for mutants. It’s ostensibly a school because most mutants are adolescents when their powers awaken. There we are safe, secure, and we can learn to handle our special abilities. Some of us who are more experienced and trained go out and find other mutants who may be in trouble. People like you. We do our best to get them out of trouble and to safety. The school sits on an island in a huge lake in upstate New York, this is all on a vast private estate, so it is very private and very secure.”
We pulled onto the 95 south a little ways behind Jack. “Feel free to ask anything you like Allora. You could be heading to your new home if you like it, so knowing about it and us beforehand makes sense.”
