She did make a good point. They would need more of the food if they were to survive here.

He dragged the two of them towards a shallow side tunnel, more of a deep crater, but out of the way all the same.

Keeping their backs to the wall, he set Voah down before the pack followed. He began rummaging through what was left inside while looking nervously around them.

They heard the hard speech of the mould-folk off in the distance of the camp. There were at least two of the them awake, if not more, though she didn’t yet make out the sounds of any sort of work being done.

The crater stunk of decay and defecation. This area must have been used as a place for refuse. After quickly going over the supplies, the two of them determined they would have to scavenge from the village or get lucky finding some of the right mushrooms on their escape route.

A distraction of some kind would be a last resort and certainly wouldn't draw the attention of everyone in the settlement. So stealth it was.

"If we get infected with the spores... we need some kind of mantra to focus our minds. We move on, no matter what we hear or think we hear. Just keep quiet and keep moving." Voah suggested.

"If one of us is caught... I... won't leave you behind. We stick together. Agreed?"

Normally, she would never ask someone to save her or stay behind with her… but the place was slowly breaking her mind and she was beginning to feel afraid that they might never leave.

Tarmen didn’t like these final moments of sanity. A pledge like this was usually when things went south and frankly, he was reaching that point himself.

He looked Voah dead in the eyes. He probably looked ready to crack, no barrier for the doubt and fear underneath, and he didn’t care. He reached out to hold her shoulder and gave it a reassuring squeeze.

“We stick together. Always.”

Then his fragile mask was back on, ready for everything to fall a part as he guided them out of the pit.

Pressing her lips into a serious line, Voah nodded and steeled her mind and her faith in Tarmen. The man had stuck with her this far so if doubt came to her she was sure she could push past it and best it.
