Intruding Upon the Intruder

Soon Sam emerged from the hole under the rock, not expecting anyone else to be there. As before, his arms had to go first, then he pulled himself through the hole.

Looking through the dry bush, Sam noticed the boots of someone standing by Pale Moon. Moon was reacting in the same way he would when Sam stroked him, which was unusual. Moon didn’t take too well with strangers. It took Sam a while to break Pale Moon, and then he was the only one that could ride him.

Trusting in his horses judgment, Sam came out from behind the bush, standing to his full 5’ 10” height. His dark eyes inspected Rainey for a second, surprised at seeing a young woman about his age.

Sam’s hand slid from the knife at his side, believing himself not to be in danger. She knew how to treat a horse, Moon seemed to like her, so she must be a good person.

Smiling, Sam tipped his hat toward her. “Thanks for taking care of Pale Moon,” he offered. “I am Sam Pocowatchit.”
