Calf and Mom Together

Sam watched the younger girl peel off. He couldn’t help but notice the contrast between the two sisters. Rainey seemed more mature, calmly handling herself. Her younger sister seemed hyper, the kind that jumps around all over the place. Bubbly. Sam shook his head and chuckled.

He led Pale Moon right to the stable and untied the calf. He lifted it off Pale Moon’s saddle and laid her next to her mother. Taking off his hat, Sam wiped the sweat of his brow. Despite not getting the approval of the matriarch of the family, Sam felt he was already earning his keep.

The calf’s blood was on both Pale Moon and himself. It didn’t matter. He felt good about helping in the situation.

The cow nuzzled with her calf, glad they were together again. Sam closed the gate and walked over to the wooden fence, and pulled himself up to sit for a while.

It was then Sam remembered that Rainey had asked him about the cave. If he were completely honest, he’d tell her it was a burial ground. He’d be dishonest if he told her he didn’t see anything in the cave.

“I noticed the features of the rock layers,” he brought up. “It deserves more of a look.”
