Seymour - "Hal"

Who: Seymour Niples
Where: Computer Server room #314
When: A day after the mutiny meeting
Seymour opened the door quietly and crept into the darkened room. He
checked behind him to make sure nobody saw him enter. "This whole
situation is just ridiculous." He complained. "I'm a Royal
Ambassador, not some kind of computer hacker!"
He pulled out one of the folded monitors from a large humming server
and started jabbing buttons on the touchscreen display.
"Lets see if anybody bothered to change the command codes since I was
Captain." He said, then grinned to himself as the screen made a happy
noise and logged him in. "Useless IT department." he muttered, but
was happy that he could predict their laziness.
"Now all I need to do is access the long-range communications and
call the nearest SpaceCorps ship... oh there's one." He looked at a
graphical representation of the galaxy and where the Blue Dwarf was
within it. The closest ship was the SC Oath-Keeper. It looked like it
was still searching for them.
"Ah, yes... now if I just select you and prepare my message..."
Seymour started typing a short message to the Oath-Keeper, which
included their current coordinates.
"This is all you need to know to find exactly where we are." he said
happily and pressed the "Send" button.
Several alarms sounded, and Seymour was plunged into a red glow. He
jumped up, sending the computer monitor crashing to the floor.
"What? What did I do? I didn't do anything illegal!" He said. "In
fact, i did the most 'legal' thing around here in ages!"
He put his hand over one alarm, trying to muffle the sound, and then
stretched to put his hand over another.
Then he noticed the computer screen. It was showing something he'd
never seen before, it wasn't a picture of Holly or any other AI he'd
known, it was a shiny glass dome with a bright red light in the
centre.
It caught his attention at the same time someone entered the room.
When they spoke it made him jump.
"I guess you're figured out by now that you can't do that."
Seymour turned, and let go of the sirens. Andy Roos stood in the
doorway holding a mop. Seymour noticed the mop was a horrid stained
brown colour, he got a wiff of something nasty and held his nose.
Andy put a key in the wall and turned the sirens off. "I guess you
tried to communicate with the SC Oath Keeper right?"
"Well... what's it to you?"
"It won't let you. The program I mean. It's been programmed to stop
anyone from turning us over to the SpaceCorps." Said Andy.
"On who's orders?"
"The Captain's of course."
"Aren't you a janitor?" Seymour asked, confused at the conversation
he was in.
Andy just smiled.
Seymour looked down at the semi-broken monitor on the floor, it was
still showing the same image. "What's that?"
"Hal."
"Hal?"
"From 2001."
"How old do you think I am?!" Seymour said.
"No, the film. 2001 Space Odyssey. Never seen it?"
"Do I look like I'm interested in popular culture?" Seymour said, and
pushed the janitor aside to leave the room.
