Trapped with Jed (part 2)

Who: Nikki
Where: Medi-bay
When: Not long after the last post

Nikki lay unmoving on a hospital bed inside the Medi-bay. Her arms were still clutching the mind scanner that contained the secret memories of Jed Calvert. The scanner hummed quietly as it played the memories like a tape recorder into Nikki's mind.

Tara the holographic nurse with no personality checked her vital signs, then moved on to the next patient with the cold unemotional manner of a computer program. Her medical opinion was to just leave the memory scanner running, it wasn't causing Nikki any physical harm, but to turn the device off might cause Nikki some serious brain damage.

Who: Nikki and Jed
Where: Inside Nikki's mind
When: Around 2 weeks after being abducted from the moon, but inside Nikki's mind, time is skipping really fast

Nikki looked up as light began to fill the room. There was a metal table and men in masks. Her thoughts were so slow and muffled, like a long distance telephone call. She looked up at the table as the sound began to return to her ears, screams like nothing she had ever heard before. There on top of the table was Jed. A gaping hole in his chest and his legs pinned down but it was defiantly Jed.

The surgeons surrounding him were wearing TransMed uniforms. It was still hard to hear, Nikki surmised that this was because Jed couldn’t. She was only witness to what happened. Jed continued to scream as the surgeons extracted a large amount of what must have been blood (it was green). He was stitched up and sedated.

When he woke up he found himself in a cell with his captain and many other people all restrained against the outside wall. Jed turned to Samantha and tried to speak, but the words stuck in his throat. Sam turned to him ‘What are you then?’ Jed blinked confused by the question. Sam looked sympathetic and asked again. ‘I’m human ma’am. We all are, quite evidently.’ She shook her head and pointed to a man sat up against the far wall. ‘Commander Jonathon Richards,’ Nikki looked up at him ‘is an android hybrid’ Nikki stumbled backwards as she realised that was the man she shot in the corridor. “I am a GELF hybrid. There are 8 experiments left in total, all the others proved incompatible and died. We were crashed deliberately, so they could experiment on us.”

Nikki looked at Jed. He was pacing the room in frustration.

“So I’ll ask again, what are you?” Asked Sam.

Jed looked up at her; she knew all along that her crew was being used as a hideous experiment. Jed stared at her and grimaced “I'm an abomination.” he cried out. Nikki knew, because she was sharing his memories, that he wanted to kill himself.

With that his thirst got the better of him, legs burst from his chest and eyes appeared on his face. The shackles were pulled taught setting of a switch where electricity powered down the chains and into Jed, knocking him out cold.

The next few months faded into each other as Jed was kept heavily sedated. Flashes of light, blurred images and mumbled conversations. The only thing Jed knew for definite was that it hurt. Whatever they did to him was so incredibly painful he had no choice but to shut down. One day was indistinguishable from another; but he had to remember that no matter what, he was human.

When Jed woke up properly for the first time he was in a small room, alone with a giant TV screen. As the video played it showed video footage of Hymenoptera warrior bugs. Nikki was in the room with him, sharing his memories as he watched the large TV screen. The footage showed Hymenoptera bugs that have been captured and put into large iron cages, and were being poked with long sticks. A scientist then brought out a machine gun and fired at the Hymenoptera. Green blood splattered out from it's insectoid body and covered the screen.

Jed screamed, and tried to look away but his entire body was tied to a chair, and his head was fixed in place so that he couldn't look away. He was forced to watch as another Hymenoptera was slaughtered by humans.

They were testing him, testing his reactions to the Hymenoptera. Seeing if he felt any emotion for them.

It worked. Jed couldn't display any more emotion. He screamed and thrashed about as much as his bonds could allow him. When he squeezed his eyes shut, a device dropped down from over head that opened his eyelids with small pincers and kept them forced open.

Jed was traumatized by the amount of Hymenoptera bugs he was forced to watch, so much so that he pushed this memory down deep and almost forgot that he was even one of them. He hated being one of them, sharing their sticky green blood.

He thought of how he could stop this from happening, Hymenopterans were intolerant to alcohol, maybe he could control it.

The TV screen changed to show the Hymenoptera ships, and a radical plan to merge Hymenoptera and existing JMC technology. Bulky JMC ships covered in slimy Hymenoptera tendrils. Jed wasn't even listening at this point, he was thinking about how he could stop himself from loosing his own Humanity.

Much later, the door opened at the other end of the room and he stepped out onto Earth’s soil. He was supposed to report to the recruitment office tomorrow to receive his pips and insignia; he wandered into the nearest bar and sat down. He'd always heard people say some good things about Whiskey.

<6 Months Later>

Two officers waited outside the bar. Jed stumbled out onto the pavement and promptly threw up. The officers looked down at him, ‘You Jedidiah Calvert?’ The taller officer said with the distinct ring of contempt in his voice. ‘Maybe? Who wants to know?’
The officers picked him up ‘Well Jed you just made captain, orders straight from Eckerslike himself.’
Jed was walked off towards a transport ship. ‘What’s my ship?’ Jed slurred as best he could.
‘The JMC Fools Gold.’ Jed was thrown in and left to wallow in his whiskey as the transport took off and dragged Jed to his new life.

<2 years later>

Jed sat in his new chair, the paper on his desk awarding him Captainship of the Blue Dwarf. The words seemed familiar, something about his mission. Jed needed a drink to jog his memory, he picked up his whiskey bottle and spilled it all over the paper. As the words ran into one Jed forgot all about it and shuffled off to get more whiskey.
