Rosette - "Flashback"

<snip>
Seymour waved his hands over his face. "Don't worry." He said. "But what I
really do want to talk to you about is very serious." He said.
"Oh?" Said Amber. "More important than being invaded by giant slugs? More
important than being lost in space with no way to get back to Earth? More
important than mistakenly giving a gun to a four year old girl?" She sighed.
"It's something to do with your antique furniture isn't it?"
"No." Said Seymour, and leaned closer to her over the Captain's desk.
"Then what? Your wine rack?"
"No. This is very serious." he said. "I want you to arrest.... Rosette."
Amber's brow furrowed, and she leaned back in Jays chair. Then she laughed. "For
what reason? Why should I arrest Rosette?"
"She's a Hymenoptera spy." Seymour said. "I'm certain of it."
Amber laughed again. "Based on what information?"
</snip>
Rosette sat up from her seat in the security office. The camera had just caught
that in the Captain's office - although the video wasn't working for some
reason, and the audio kept cutting out... Most likely Calvert firing his pistols
randomly while he was there, or Jay putting a towel over it, and jamming some
blu-tack in the microphone... Some things are meant to be kept private.
"What a smeg-head!" She said, storming off to deal with it. She soon found
Seymour in his new Captains Quarters, with a crying Alota, still upset about the
way Amber had talked to her.
"Seymour." She said, having opened the door with her security override key.
Alota looked up to see who it was, and calmed down a bit. She walked over to
where Alota was sobbing to herself, and Seymour blatantly failing to cheer her
up... She knelt down in front of the toddler, and smiled.
"It's ok. I need to shout at your daddy for a minute. I'll come back and play
with you when I'm done, okay?" she said, tapping Alota on the nose when she
finished. This seemed to cheer her up immensely, although anyone watching would
swear witchcraft was involved.
"Seymour." she said, standing up. She grabbed him by the collar, and dragged
him into another room.
"Listen to me." she began, angrily. Seymour knew she was angry about something,
and had learned not to deal with any kind of emotion from women, it just lead to
trouble.
"I don't know what you're trying to do to me, but getting me arrested is NOT
something that I'm happy about. I've saved lives on this ship. I've got
control of the bug, so it's never coming back, and this is the ONLY home I
have." she started to explain, almost changing her anger to tears.
-------------------------------------
It was a quiet summers day on Earth - Near London to be precise. A pristine
white house, no, a huge mansion lay in an even bigger, very well kept garden.
Inside, a piano tunefully playing, under the instruction of a girl in her late
teens.
Family members stood around, listening to her amazing performance, the tune
filling the halls of the giant house, bouncing off of the walls in a way the
architect had expected. The accoustics were perfect. It looked to whoever saw
it, a perfect family of happy people. Rich, yes. But still happy.
Suddenly, the windows exploded in a firey ball of hell. Flames took to the
curtains like a fat man to an all-you-can-eat buffet, tearing them from the
rails. The family all scattered, running to safe places within the house.
Unfortunately, large men burst through the flaming windows, their guns firing
wildly, tearing through expensive pictures, ornaments, and people. The butlers
all sacrificed themselves first, falling to the onslaught of cordite propelled
lead.
The young girl closed a door behind her, and ran out into the back garden, away
from the fires that raged. She ducked down behind a rose bush, and waited,
hoping her family would be out right behind her.... But no one came. All she
could do was cry as she waited for the police and fire brigade to turn up, and
put out the smoldering remains of her house. If only they could put out the
smoldering remains of her life, too...
--------------------------------------
"I lost EVERYTHING." Rosette screamed at Seymour, tears now flowing freely down
her face. Seymour could only stand there, wondering if he should hug her like
Alota had done with Amber, or run away, scared.
"This is my home now. I have friends here... people I consider to be family.
Don't ruin this for me." she said, falling to her knees.
"A... Are you ok?" Seymour asked, really unsure what to do. Although he claimed
he was upper class, he really had very little compared to Rosette's upbringing.
"See? This is why everyone hates you... You claim you're upper class, but I've
seen slugs on Mollopod with more nobility in their blood, or slime, or whatever
it is." She said, wiping the tears from her eyes, and getting back to her feet.
"Leave me alone, Seymour. I rebuilt your apartment for you after I wrecked it,
calling in favours I had from people on Earth. I don't have much left now. If
you take that away from me by getting me arrested, when I get out, I'm going to
kill you, even if it's in front of a squad of fully armed marines."
She left him standing there, not caring how he felt about it. As she entered
the main room where Alota was, she smiled as she had before, and sat down with
her to cheer her up.... Maybe it would work for both of them.
