Re: The first rule of fight club is...

Who: Eric, guy in a hooded robe and a bunch of losers.
Where: The 'Secret Battlegym'
When: About.................. now.
<SNIP>
"Thankyou for joining us. I am sure you know all the rules, and if
you don't, well, there is only one - once you are inside the secret
battlegym, there are no rules!"
<END SNIP>
Another, more nervous looking guy in a hooded robe rushed up to the
first hooded robed guy and spoke in a weasly nervous voice.
"Actually, there is a few rules, as you read in your documents. You
can't kill anyone, and if you do on purpose, you are disqualified
and sent to the Blue Dwarf brig with broken kneecaps, and for some
of you, that's where you live anyway. Also, if you become injured
and cannot perform your ship duties, your insurance will not cover
it and you cannot hold us liable. That is all."
The nervous guy went away.
Eric had discovered the existence of this battlegym by accident,
thinking of turning the unused gym into a training area for the
security team for Phil. Later, while filing through hundreds of Blue
Dwarf documents about the gym, he discovered one that prison
officials had forgotten to electronically shred.
Apparently most JMC ships had a battlegym - which don't usually
include the gym that most people know about, but on this ship is
unused by normal people. Most battlegyms are made up of three large
gyms that are not on the ship blueprints that the captain gets too
see (however, if the captain is very sadistic and enjoys this sort
of thing, the prison staff, who are always sadistic, will the the
captain in on the fun).
Most of the people involved are prisoners, who have nothing else to
do, and when they are doing well, they like the attention this gives
them, as well as the bonuses the Warden will give. Some competitors
are prison guards themselves, and they use better weapons than most
of the prisoners, aside from the most popular ones.
Eric was surprised by the amount of the lower ranked engineers who
had somehow discovered the battlegym and eagerly joined. Eric noted
a few security team members who were believed to have been killed in
an explosion a few years ago.
Aside from the fighting, there was also a massive gambling empire
spawned from the betting the battlegym produced. Eric noticed that
Mini-Phil was a regular spectator, and once participated in a
special royal rumble type event, which he somehow won.
As there were so many competitors on this ship, all 3 secret
battlegyms plus the otherwise unused normal gym were almost in
constant use, allowing each member between one and three matches a
week.
