Efof - "Check your six"

<snip>
"Sorry to interrupt… captain." Said Dean. "But I think we've better
do something rather than just sit in the middle of a massive enemy
fleet and made hand-signals to the enemy leader."
"Oh yeah… um…. Open all turrets and launch fighters!"
Along the sides of the Blue Dwarf, turrets extended and began
firing. The flight deck hangar doors opened and several wings of
ships flew out to engage the attacking fighters.

Who: Efof Yuwan'Kar
Where: Blue Dwarf / Space Eagle
When: Battle stations
Efof left his burger … there was no time to eat it.
Efof left his coffee to go cold … there was no time to drink it
Efof ran out of the coffee shop he'd been waiting in with some other
pilots … there wasn't much time left.
In the rush out of the shop he accidentally walked into a man
leaving the shop carrying a paper mug of coffee, the coffee spilled
all over the man scolding him and making a mess of his clothes, but
Efof didn't stop or help them man to clean up … there was no time
left, and very probably there would be no time afterwards.
Time was a funny thing. Would there be any of it later? He made his
way to the flight deck to launch. Was there a point even launching
as there was no time left?
Outside there was close to a million Hymenoptera ships. They had to
fight them all.
Most people would die.
But they would die to save Earth.
But they would die.
So was there really much point in even trying?
Efof looked over to CJ Boddington. He would die today. He would die
without even firing a single shot. So what would be the point?
CJ Boddington looked over at Efof. Boddington looked deep into his
eyes, as if he knew that today he would die.
"Is there really much point?" he asked Efof philosophically.
Efof shrugged. "it's a laugh innit?"
Efof pressed his thrusters and the Space Eagle shot into the launch
tunnel at full speed, knocking John Keats arse-over-tit as he tried
to get into his own shuttle.
The fighters banded up into wings of three, this would help them
cover each other when they had enemy fighters on tail.
Efof looked left to see CJ Boddington, silently praying to himself
in his Blue Midget. He looked right to see another Blue Midget pull
up alongside him, and MK7 waved through the window.
Over the com channel people were praying, they were saying goodbye
to one another and how much they love their colleagues in case they
didn't get a chance later. Efof rolled his eyes and made a gagging
motion to MK7 in the next shuttle, who grinned.
"Listen up you bunch of soppy girls!" Efof said cheekily over the
radio. "if you all start thinking like that then we're definitely
toast. Lets just chill out, have a bit of fun, keep high-morale and
slap as many bad-guys as we can. Who's with me?!"
He had hoped for a cheer, all he got was the sound of a short scream
and explosion as CJ Boddington next to him exploded into tiny tiny
pieces.
Debris bounced off his hull and CJ's blood splattered on his screen.
Efof bit his lip and turned the windscreen wipers on to wipe off the
remains of his wingman. "Happy thoughts, happy thoughts" he repeated
to himself.
John Keats pulled up alongside him to replace Boddington. Efof gave
him the thumbs up through the windscreen.
"Bogies inbound!" Said Keats over the radio.
Efof checked his nose, then the radar. "Oh right, Keatsy take point
I'll drop behind, maybe we can get him in-between us."
The small Hymenoptera fighter fired at the lead ship, but Keats
twisted and dodged long enough for Efof to get behind the
Hymenoptera and get a missile lock. The bug exploded.
"One down, nine thousand nine hundred and ninety nine to go!" Efof
said cheerfully. "I told you we can do it!"
"Uh guys, I have a missile lock." Said MK7, who was somewhere behind
them.
"Then shoot something!" said Efof.
"No, I mean there's a missile lock on ME!"
Keats and Efof pulled up to loop back, to drop back into position
with MK7. Keats looked back at their targets. "Three ships. Two
fighters and one big fat bug."
"One each!" Said Efof happily. "I'll take care of fatty!"
"Why do you get the easy one?" Said MK7.
"Easy? Its bigger!"
"Easier to hit!"
Keats wasted his target pretty quickly and joined Efof in chasing
the fat bug. The ship looked like a large dung beetle. It weaved
around, making it hard for them both to get a weapons lock. But the
ship never fired back, it just seemed content in taking them for a
ride.
"This is a waste of time." Said Keats. "Its harmless, it hasn't even
got any weapons!"
"Don't give up now, besides every bug we kill is better in the
longrun right?" said Efof.
While they were distracted, another fat beetle-ship snook up behind
them and fired a large net around them, looking like a spiders web.
The net caught them by surprise and closed around their shuttles,
bringing their ships together with a loud metallic clang.
"Hey watch my paintwork!" joked Efof.
"Paintwork my ass! We're a sitting duck, we can't move!" said Keats.
They looked around their two shuttles to see five hymenoptera
fighters closing around them…
