JAMIE BRADDOCK
Jamie had been in the US long enough to know a lot of people were attracted to his accent, and high school was no different. In less than half a day he was already a part of Olympus, the name for the self proclaimed gods of the school. With the exception of one or two these were healthy snobby losers, truly pointless kids on their way to becoming adults with even less purpose in life. The exceptions were the ones who would actually achieve something after they left high school. There was way more useful potential in almost any other group in the school. These ‘popular’ kids were actually the most unpopular students in the school. They were so easy to infiltrate through their narcissism and arrogance. He could tell that most of the guys resented him but put a face on, Jamie added kudos to their self-absorbed little group. One of the interesting ones was a fencer and invited Jamie along to the fencing club, Jamie accepted at once to the annoyance of several others who were looking to have a Brit in their social circle, especially a posh one.
He had hooked up at morning break with one of the peripheral wannabe girls, he had forgotten how much he missed being in a normal school, there was so much sex on offer and he was going to indulge himself. Yes Jamie was going to like high school.
Jamie was privy to conversations about people he didn’t know. Quite a few of the students had grown and changed over the summer break, taller, slimmer, fatter, that kind of thing. A boy called Justin had been called to the Deputy Principal for having a beard, quite an impressive one by all accounts. One girl was said to have had a nose job but opinion was that she had had her whole face done as she was barely recognisable.
At lunchtime his guide, Melinda, took him to the Olympus table, there was plenty of space around it so no one encroached on their territory. Under the guise of checking his phone he messaged Ethan and Jack, just checking in really.
He deftly fielded a barrage of shallow questions, it seemed amongst these wealthy dullards that The Crown was seen as a reality show of some kind or a documentary and that it was real. He chose not to dissuade them of their illusions. They were kind of disappointed when one of the guys asked if Jamie knew Prince Harry and Megan. Jamie said he had met him on several occasions but not her. He gently told his eager audience that these ‘young royals’ were probably the same age as their parents. He took a distinct pleasure in bursting that particular bubble.
