Pilgrimage of Bones

Islana noticed they had overslept when she slowly open her eyes. The sun was higher in the sky than usual. The light didn't filter down her as fast as it did high a I've on the desert plateau.

Kaithak had already taken to the skies likely due to some internal clock and Madaya still slept. Islana wiped a bit of drool from the girl chin, smiling, but not waking her yet. She could do with some sleep.

In the light of day she could tell more about her surroundings. Large slabs of smooth stone on the ground told a tale of roads. Fallen pillars and granite blocks, layed scattered among the ruins in hazardous fashion, most eroded by the strong winds that blew across this valley.

She saw archways that could have been doorways still standing tall and in some cases the only part of this place architecture that appeared to have survived almost unscathed.

Street after street of abandoned houses made for a terrifying thought. Each house was once a home, a home belonging to a family and now there was only emptiness.

Emptiness and this strange and eerie silence that seemed to cover the whole valley. But they seemed to be safe here for the time being and the air was much cooler than she had experienced since arriving in the Great Desert of Skulls.

Maybe they could stay and explore. Find something useful...
