Lovers’ Quarrel

“Because know better now.” He was referring to all the new information Alexis just dropped on them, along with everyone else’s additions.

Vauxians don’t lie. You ask a question, you’ll get the answer. He turned his head once more, willing to feel the spikes of discomfort in order to face her.

“I think you try to make up for being disown by Pillars and Inquisition. Try to find you purpose and value. You want them take you back and willing to do all it takes, no matter the cost. You care more for you old life and ways than new life with me.” He started to tear up and his voice was cracking from the emotion. The last bit probably being the bigger issue to him than the former.

Alexis quietly listened to the words exchanged, and came to the conclusion that this seemed to be a painful, but overdue talk between the two lovers.

She lightly squeezed Gonyaul’s hand and returned to her former seat, feeling it wasn’t her place to interject.

The accusation was a heavy blow to Voah Sahnsuur, ex-Arbiter of the Holy Office of Inquisition, ex-High Sword of Vastad. It wasn’t true, but to the Vauxian lying half dead in the cave it must have felt like truth.

This situation felt similar to when she had left him on the plains in order to avoid the confrontation with the Purger, which she was sure would not have ended well. But she would not leave him again… it wasn’t a promise she was willing to break. She admired his change in attitude but she had to speak out.

“I admit I have been looking for purpose and value. Trying to find my place as a wayward traitor. I wish they would take me back but more so I wish I could change them… and I have given… *everything* for you….”

Her voice shook in a whisper. “Everything…”

“…in hopes… that we could have some kind of life together. And you would be safe from the Inquisition. How dare you… I care more for your survival and legacy than my own life.”

Tarmen sat and watched the show unfold, chewing over some of Gonyaul’s speech.
He wanted to call him naive in his declaration, sounding like a shining knight from children’s tales, fighting for justice and for a better tomorrow. Stuff Tarmen had relegated to useless ideals left for royal brats.
With the argument consuming the conversation though, he simply passed a look to Alexis and let the lovers quarrel.

Voah tried to still the tension in her quavering jaw and the tears that fell in silent streams down her bruised cheeks.

“I know full well I’ve failed you… but as I said before… I’m not going anywhere.”
