Burn and crash

Jessie looked up form her scavanged breakfast, hearing loud clangs
coming from a direction she'd normally stayed away from, as there
were too many people there. Red lights began flashing, and, somehow,
she knew they signalled an evacuation. Ingrained reactions came to
the surface, and she sprang to her feet, adn, without stopping to
grab anything, sprinted straight for the inhabited area that she'd
avioded for so long.
A mere ten metres away from a closing blast door stood a vaguely
familiar figure, clutching to his chest what looked like a case of
beer. From a standing start, there was no chance of him reaching the
door in time. Suddenly, with no warning, the door stopped, and the
man dropped under the door, leaving the beer behind. A moment later,
he and some other, less familiar people appeared under the door,
closely followed by a number of gelfs. A breif firefight ensued, and
the two surviving officers - WHY did they seem so familiar? -
surrendered. But by that time Jessie was sliding across the floor at
full speed, snatching up a pair of guns on the way. Before she so
much as slowed down, a dozen gelfs more gelfs were dead, and in less
than a second she was behind a pile of crates. Collided with them, in fact.
Ouch.
