As the dark Nothing-Eyes prowled around the screaming crowd, Alex’s beat-behind brain kept kicking him. All he could think was: I forgot to say it. I forgot to say it.
People were shoving about in panic and he’d been pushed apart from Jade, again. His eight-bowl-belly was aching, and the forced movement of the crowd was making him nauseated. Despite the danger he suddenly had an urge which paid no heed to such things – he desperately needed to find somewhere to hurl. He stumbled behind a group of tear streaked, trembling nobles and fell to his knees, bringing up much of his dinner.
A horrific shadow-beast swept past, rounding up a terror-stricken group before chasing them into another beast’s suddenly enlarged jaws. When the jaws snapped shut, dissolving smokily into nothingness themselves, the people had gone. The nightmares seemed to go for the taller people first, and those that were standing, upright. He was glad to be on his knees.
Oh Gods, Jade… The others. What was happening to the others? He got to his feet and barged back into the crowd, trying among the screaming and the crying and the pushing to remain semi-ducked, and to force his tanked brain to think straight.

After a panicked few moments he spotted Jade - her smaller height helping currently keep her hidden from the monsters, but making her stand out to him - and waded towards her, ducking further as a creature wheeled, screeching, overhead.

Alex Two was not a nice man. Alex One was not a nice man, either, but at least he was a good man, and, deep down, a kind man. While somewhere inside his scarred, withered, selfish heart Two may have had a crumb of decency, possibly, he was most certainly not a kind man. However, it had pained him deeply when his wife had burst into post-punch tears, and now confronted with this new horror she was, understandably, beside herself. More pale and quiet than he could remember ever having seen her.
“Oh, Kitten...” They were sat, currently shielded behind the seething crowd. He'd noticed the shadow creatures went for the upright, taller ones first and had pulled her down to the floor. He held her tightly, stroking the back of her head “… my little kitten”. He rocked her gently, mumbling a song and trying to keep up an appearance of calm, all the time scoping around, looking for an escape, and hoping desperately that the shadow beasts would miss them. As one of Ra’s henchmen, a pampered bully, he’d become far more accustomed to creating situations of peril than having to escape them. Still, the ability to formulate a good escape plan should be in there, somewhere, in the dim recesses of his mind. It was like riding a sand dragon, wasn’t it?
If only he hadn’t partaken of the Hallowed Smoke when he'd popped home to change his outfit, his mind would have been clearer.
“Cahhm aaahhhn you big idiot, think!” An angry voice demanded.
He was surprised to find it was his own.

At Jaahday’s frightened face, he swallowed and smiled, his eyes glinting with forced confidence.

“Don’t worry” he told her, “we are going to get out of this.”

“Jade...” He pushed through the crowd, and the madness, and pulled the terrified woman towards him, ducking her down behind the people to shield her from the shadows, and the horrific uber-beast in the middle. “I’m so sorry.”
“What for?” She managed to squeak, as an unearthly wind howled around the squealing crowd above. Stray locks of her hair blew upwards in the backdraft of something abominable sweeping by.
“... I never told you how nice you look tonight.”
Despite the extreme danger, instinct compelled her to try and kiss him – one of those ‘during the midst of this dire peril we’re still gonna kiss, even though we should be using every molecule of energy and wit to escape this terrible threat’ kisses, that you see in movies.

“I wouldn’t,” he warned, lifting a pragmatic chin up and out of reach. “I just spewed, behind that lot…” Through the legs of the nobles, he went to indicate the group behind whose legs he’d thrown up.
But they’d disappeared.
Really… Disappeared.

At Jade’s frightened face, he swallowed and scowled, his distantly anguished eyes drunk, weary, yet filled with a no-nonsense confidence.

“Don’t worry” he told her, “we’re gonna get outta this.”
