"It seems he has spent the past few hours in garbage bay ten."
"Then go get him," Larry stated, resuming his relaxed sleeping position.
"Oddly, though," Marlene continued, "There is a trace of element 118 in this
same garbage bay."
Marlene waits for an answer but soon realize it's like waiting for time to
rewind.
"Do you realize what this could mean?" she asks.
Larry, without opening his eyes, shakes his head no.
"Lieutenant," Marlene said in a rather authorative voice, "I would suggest a
science team be sent to investigate Smegg's actions in this docking bay and
the detection of the rare and deadly element 118."
"Unfortunately," she continued, "most of the science team is on leave and
you are the only one qualified to lead this team."
Larry sat up with a groan and collapsed onto his desk.
As he hit the table, a gust of air created by his moving mass kicked the
envelope Phil left off the desk to land at Cauty's feet.
"What's this?" she asked, plucking the envelope from the floor.
Larry lifted his eyes to see her holding the envelope. Nothing of
importance came to mind save for the severe pain in his groin. "Throw it
away."
"Sir." Marlene nodded and tucked it into her hip pocket for recycling later.
"I'm afraid I must insist. Element 118 is a registered toxin and
hazardous to human.. and JMC ... forms of life. Regulations 324.23C clearly
state that when such toxins or other hazardous substances are found to be
present in JMC ships, up to and including garbage bays, post mortem remains
and the ships kitchens, a science team must attend to take samples and
advise on safety precautions. I have already taken the liberty of
performing the actions required by regulation 324.23D, to wit, the
notification of the most senior officer on board of the potential hazard.
In addition to this, regulation....."
"Alright. Alright, alright, alright!" Rongside threw the half melted ice
pack across the office.
"I have also taken the liberty of arranging for coffee to be waiting at the
potential hazardous zone." Marlene said. First the stick, then the carrot.

Half an hour later the science team, clad in bio-hazard suits stood
expectantly outside the doors of garbage bay ten. Marlene ran through
several checklists without needing to refer to them, and then they cranked
open the doors and meandered in.
Lt. Smegg looked up at the arrival of the science team.
"I must formally caution you..." Marlene began to read him the rights of
person or persons presumed contaminated by hazardous toxins, then paused.
"You little bugger you. I've had a priority one request outstanding for
several hours for an engineer to come and plug something into a universal
socket that doesn't want to be. And you're down here playing with the
rubbish!"
(reply Smegg, Rongside, any)
