Starbug and Kayn don't mix...
(OOC- Warning - Long post... You have been warned!)
An hour before he was due to take off and blow some asteroids to
peices, Kayn was in the VR Sims, learning a crash course guide to
flying Starbugs.
'Step one - Turn the Key' the computer said.
Kayn made a note of this
'Step two - Check the mirror'
The steps went down to 'Step Five - Turn the steering wheel' By this
time, Kayn had filled an entire pad of paper with notes. In the VR
training exersise, he crashed three starbugs into planets, and drove
one straight into a small star...
Nipels had doubts on whether to send Kayn or not. Unfortunatly, Kayn
was the only 'volunteer' (he was still recovering from a huge
headache caused by a flatuent rodent a few hours prior to when he
signed up for the mission) to be stupid enough to try shooting off a
prototype weapon.
When Kayn was asked to take a 'friend' on board with him, he had
great difficulty. Usually people avoided him for his usual annoying
nature, but now people RAN from him as soon as he was within a
hundred miles. In the end, he found that the only things that would
go on board with him, were a few scutters.
He was waved farewell, asked for his last will and testiment and
whether he prefered an oak or mahogany coffin, and sent off into
space. Starbug scraped the sides of the wall as it took off.
Kayn got the hang of the real controls of Starbug really quickly. At
least in the real controls you didn't have to parralel park or do
three point turns and worry about stopping distances. The Scutters
were in charge of making Kayn cups of coffee. Over the intercom, Kayn
heard Nipels say that the mission would last arround twenty hours, so
Kayn could use all the coffee he could get.
The Drive Room Team forgot to tell Kayn that Starbug only had Decaf
coffee...and started making bets on whether he would come out alive.
Nipels instantly placed a bet of 50 dollarpounds that Kayn would
smash straight into an asteroid. Everyone did. With odds of 3-1 that
Kayn WOULD hit an asteroid and die, and odds at 4-1 that Smegg's new
gun would blow a hole into Starbug's hull when it jammed, people
could make easy money. The only other odds were that Kayn would be
stangled by the scutters (2-1) and that he would come out alive (7586-
1)
Kayn flew a few hundred meters in front of Blue Dwarf, just so he
could be sure it was ok. Another option was added to the betting -
That Kayn would crash into Blue Dwarf (5-1) Nipels changed his bet at
that time.
As the first asteroids appeared, Kayn pressed the big red button
marked 'Fire'. The gun fired a salvo of bullets. Smegg had actually
made a weapon that WORKS! Smegg felt two emotions - Pride that his
weapon had worked, and disapointment because he had just lost 60
dollarpounds in the bet that his gun would blow up.
The asteroids disintigrated on contact, turning them into smaller
asteroids, which in turn made even smaller asteroids. Kayn felt he
had played a game like this before...A few specks of dirt hit the
hull of blue Dwarf, making a few dents but nothing serious - Maybe
Kayn would make it? People started wishing the chose the bigger
odds...
A hours minutes later, Kayn had cleared the dangerous asteroids (and
thier smaller counterparts) and Blue Dwarf was clear of the belt.
Kayn was so happy he tried a loop the loop. At which point, Blue
Dwarf accelerated, and Kayn's Starbug hit the hull of Blue Dwarf and
bounced off. The Kayn noticed that his coffee had spilt into his
trousers....and Starbug went out of control as Kayn ran about
shouting words that began with S, F and B. (I'll leave that for your
imaginations)
As soon as Starbug landed, it fell apart - and Nipels had lost
50$£
in his bets. He instantly rushed to his quarters for a change of
trousers, before being congratulated on his success...
