Distractions.

"Oh smeg." Evelina said, her cheerful tone now as lost as Ms. Plisken currently was.
"You know how I said the bomb was set for thirty hours..."
"Yes?"
"It's thirty minutes..."

Jacky was threatened with half an hour before permanent annihilation. News like this has the tendency to make a person uncomfortable.

"I'm getting very tired of things like this." Jacky said, shaking like an electric toothbrush.

"Please try an remain calm. We'll think of something." Artemis said.

"With all due respect, how the fuck am I supposed to remain calm with a bomb strapped around me?!" Jacky screeched.

"Try and think of positive things. Things that make you feel better." Artemis said. "Or at the very least, something that will distract you."

Jack took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and imagined the endlessness of space. He tried to remember constellations, he tried to remember galaxies, and eventually fantasized about what it would be like to be God. It would be, he thought, the dullest thing ever to be omnipotent. As dull as it would be already to be all-powerful, like playing a game with the cheats on, to be omniscient on top of that. You'd have no reason to use your omnipotence, since you'd know every effect of doing so in advance. Pointless, really.

Then Jacky collapsed because he had been distracted by fear of death and his own thoughts, and forgot to exhale.
