finding ones feet

Jamie wiped the oil from his forehead.  Unfortunately, his hand was also covered in oil, so it just smeared.

He had returned to his element.  All the memories of years ago had been flooding back with the time he had been onboard.

Yes, the gravity levels were different - marginally.  But it was noticeable.  Some things felt lighter than he remembered.  Climbing onto the back of the giant walking machines felt easier than climbing a tree had been on the planet.  He wasn't going to complain about this.

He was sat on the back of one of them as it had stopped while carrying a sheet of metal.  It had bent over forwards under the weight of the sheet, as if its back had given in, like an old man.  He had seen this before.

"What are you doing up there?" Cass called up.  She was doing a great job of overseeing it all.  "I'll call one back to take over for this one." She called up again before Jamie could pull himself out of the machine to call back.

"No need.  I've fixed it.  Motor wasn't accepting signals from the servo." He said, pulling himself back out fully, and replacing its cover.  "You're all fixed." he said, treating it like a sentient being.  It began to pick itself back up, letting Jamie slide down its back and onto the floor below.

"No point wasting a robot when it's perfectly good." He said as he stood again.  It had been quite a jump, forcing him to crouch on landing.

"True.  We'll get the job done faster if all our equipment is working." Cass agreed.

"Did I hear you say there's a derelict space station that might have decent stuff for us?  Get Holly to give me a call when we're ready to go, I'll be working on these until then." He said, essentially asking to go along.  He returned to the machinery to wait for the call, which seemed to come not long after that.  But time does fly when you're busy.

Jamie headed down to the hangar bay where everyone was to meet for the away mission to the station.  He was carrying a toolkit he'd collected himself of all the tools he'd grown accustomed to from the ship, and let it touch down gently on the deck as he joined everyone else.

"I figured you might need someone to pull apart any machines we find over there." He said, explaining his presence.  He appeared to be one of very few engineers onboard, and the only one at that moment capable of doing much in the way of engineering.

Then the Doctor showed up with a medkit.

"Oh yeah!" Jamie said to her as she approached the group.  Jade looked back quizically at him.  "yes?" she asked in respons to his ourburst.

Jamie blinked a couple of times.  He looked deep in thought for a second.  "Medical exam!" he exclaimed as the words suddenly came to him.  "When we get back from this?" he asked.

"Uh... Yeah..." She replied, confused by the way he got his message across.  Medical facilities and doctors hadn't existed in his world for the entire time he had been in the Jungle.  Jade inwardly sighed, thankful that she hadn't had to explain her bruises just yet.
