Prisoners Have Long Days

Thursday Morning

Doug sat in In-School Suspension or ISS as everyone called it. He spent his days here, in his dorm room or practice. It was a long and extremely boring day and right now was just the start of it.

He was currently eating breakfast, He couldn’t even go to the cafeteria. The meals were brought to them in that room. He had to come back down to eat here for dinner. It made for not a pleasant day.

The “them” in this situation were Doug and Margeaux DeMorris, the cheerleader who threw the yogurt in the cafeteria. The girl had been made to spend the weekend of the beach party cleaning the cafeteria. She was stuck in here until, well, Doug didn’t really know as he hadn’t asked.

He ate his food in silence looking around the room. A whiteboard stood at the front of the room with the words:

NO TALKING
CLEAN UP YOUR TRASH
DO YOUR WORK
NO PHONES

Written in black dry erase maker, in large, all capital letters on the board. Along with any other pertinent rules and information.

Doug finished his food and cleaned up his trash before going back to his desk and pulling out his computer; not his personal one but the one used for school. All of his work was sent to the computer but also it was how he logged in to the actual classes so he could listen in and watch what the teacher was doing. He couldn’t access anything personal on it but he could access his school email. That’s what he was doing. A pardon from the governor or in this case Head Mistress Perkey was too much to hope for but maybe a reprieve. Some email saying he had to come to class for some reason or other but of course there was none.

Damn, he was bored and there were hours to go not to mention all the other days he had to endure this. He had though devised his plan in this place. So, maybe it wasn’t all bad. He would be nice to Melissa. Nice to her. Buy her flowers, maybe other things. Talk to her every night, Hold her books for her on the way to practice. Hold doors open for her. Apologize to her but make it so no one could link him to what had happened.

Did he feel guilty about what he had done to her? Did he feel the slightest bit of remorse about injuring her like that? When he saw her on crutches did it ever once give him the slightest inclination to let her go? Of course, not. Actually, he still believed she deserved it and after Conner had cornered him in the hallway, Doug’s thoughts were even more cemented in that belief.

He, though, was nice to her because he had noticed the administration, security, and such higher-ups paying more attention to him than before. At first, he thought it might be because they thought he would break the rules again, but now he was beginning to think they might suspect him of what had happened to Melissa.

However, it was clear that Mel hadn’t said what really had happened or Doug was sure he’d be in a lot more trouble or she would because they didn’t believe her. Which meant he had what he wanted, control over her, or he thought. He had people keeping an eye on her. He knew she was only hanging out with his group, He knew that he had Carter to back him up when he needed it, if no one else would tell him what Melissa was doing, Carter would. That was why he had told Mel she could bid on Carter for the Minion Auction. It made him look not like the jealous guy he actually was and he trusted Carter. Melissa had few people on her side and Doug was sitting on top of the pecking order. That’s the way he viewed things from his perspective. Reality might have been different.

He glanced up to the desk in front of the room that held the security guard in charge of sitting in the room with the prisoners of the day. Doug wondered why does someone decide to be a school security guard. This school had a private security team so they were pretty well qualified. Considering the students here that would be prime targets for kidnappers or obsessed fans it made sense.

He thought about the food here, it was really good for school food. The top of the line athletic facilities. The proximity to the beach, The private beach the school had. And he thought about how much fun he had had the past few years and how his siblings coming here had ruined stuff for him. He did not once think that he might be having more issues this year due to his own choices. To Doug, everything that went wrong had to be the fault of others.

The time on the computer clicked away, it was time to log into his first class, He watched the other inmate in here put her earbuds in and Doug did the same, then logged into his class and the class started. It was going to be a long day.
