Take That Fourth Wall!

“It’s dark…” someone pointed out the obvious.
“Shh” Jade commanded – the one truly in charge of the ‘fabulous five’.
"Shall I get out my flashlight?"
"No."
“Why’re we hiding?” Alex whispered “I say let’s get out there, and blow the smeggers to oblivion…”
Jade pulled him down behind what felt like a cupboard and clapped a hand over his mouth.

"Hit Mark Omicron reporting no human sightings. Moving on to next objective sector." The giant feet stomped past. The fearless five cowered for longer, long enough to know for sure that it wasn't coming back. Jaxx and Evelina headed up the party, making for level seven twenty one, Red section.

Oddly enough, it was easy to find. The Roo had colour coded the sectons of the outpost to make it easier for their human pets. The lighting and signage, whilst in another language, was coloured appropriately. All they had to do was follow the rainbow.

"Reckon we'll find a pot of gold at the end?" Jamie said, as they were nearing their goal.

"Quiet up front." Barked Solvay, crouched low, stalking next to Jade, watching their backs.

"I hear something."

"Me too Eve babe." The two lead slowed down and Alex shoved past them before Jade could grab him.

"ALRIGHT HOLO SCUM DIE!" He howled manically, unleashing what should have been a hail of bullets on the enemy. What in fact happened was that the safety stuck on and the gun did nothing but click.

"The fuck Solvay?" Cass snapped. Her patience thinner than ice in a hot wave.

"How do you know my name? They with us too McReady?" He turned to Jade and gestured to the assembled group.

"Yeah. Stand down Sarge." Jade said, reaching him in time to place that reassuring hand on his shoulder.

'Sarge?' Cass mouthed to Jade

"Just run with it." Jade whispered back.

"You are dressed like prostitute Barbie." Cass smirked looking at the bedraggled doctor. Jade stuck her tongue out. Thankfully, Alex was still crazy and stalked towards the furry one with intent. Jade dived after him, almost grateful for the change of topic.

"Don't look like one of us." He glowered at the giant hamster with a look of distrust and distaste.

"Be that as it may Mr Solv..." White Wolf tried, not looking up. his fuzzy paws flying over a Roo control pad.

"Sergeant! Sergeant Solvay to you!" He retorted, cutting White Wolf off.

"Yes... Be that as it may Mr Solvay..." The hamster continued un-phased. Alex simply glared daggers at him but kept his mouth shut when Jade shook her head at him. "We can use this gate to get out of here. Just please hold on for one moment whilst I calibrate it." He continued his tapping.

Jade sighed inwardly, glad they would be back on the Dwarf soon. glad she could sedate him and treat him with the medication... Ah who was she kidding, Alex would slip his bonds first time he got and start to drink it all away again. At least it was starting to come together now was Jess one of his unit or something else?

Jade shook the thoughts away, other than the bugs, Alex hadn't shown any strange signs outside of his normal sullen behaviour. Pondering further Jade decided that chicken soup, hot chocolate and talking was what he needed most. That and a hug to tell him that it was OK, and the monsters under his bed, whilst scary and frightening, aren't that bad if you confront them.

She suddenly realised that White Wolf had been talking to them all.

"So expect some weird stuff when you go through the portal as an Atemporal it shouldn't affect me, but you never know." Jade was sure he looked smug. Difficult to tell with a hamster though.

"Like what?" Asked the doctor.

"Oh, you know. Typical Dimension Zero or fourth wall stuff." Everyone looked blank. Cass tried not to, but she was still as lost as everyone else.

"Like what?" Jaxx asked, looking more confused than everyone else.

"It's complicated... Some people see phenomenon that can't be explained. Some see nothing. for example: Imagine out there someone writing the script for your actions." The others looked confused still.

"Like fate. We are seeing fate?" Jamie asked.

"Like as in the future?" Jaxx grinned, imagining all the things he could learn. WW massaged his temple with a paw, trying to think how to explain it better.

"Basically bleed through from alternate dimensions during the duration of the jump." He settled for something simple that barely even touched the concept.

Thoomph. Thoomph. Thoomph.

"Hit Marks Pi, Phi and Psi located all remaining targets. Requesting backup." The robotic monotone of one of the three newcomers announced. At that moment, the portal shimmered into life.

"I've scrambled the data so they can't track us. It will also locate any Dwarfers in range on a scanner sweep here and in the nearby areas and grab them through. Don't ask how just go!" White Wolf ordered, dropping to all fours and disappearing.

"Come on Sarge. Lets go."

"Ah... No. I'm staying here." He had lit another cigarette. Gunfire blasted across the platform to the portal as a handful of Dwarfers piled through.

"Sorry Solvay. I don't have time for this." She manhandled him up the ramp and gave him an ungainly shove that propelled him forwards into the shimmering light.

Then she dove in herself.

She drifted in a cold void for a while before the light coalesced around her into a very warm dark room. It was empty save the glow from a back lit desk and two computer monitors. A further was switched off on the opposite wall.

"Where am I?" she breathed. It was dark outside, out of the window she could see old fashioned town houses and darkened hills in the distance. It was all washed with a drab orange glow from street lights. She noted two, what looked like baby lemon trees on the windowsill. "Alex? Cass? Jamie?" Jade asked out loud. looking around and seeing a door behind her. As she was about to make for it. She heard footsteps coming up stairs. Readying the pulse rifle in case it was an enemy, she ducked back into the room. The figure came back into the room.

"CRAP!" The mug, brightly decorated with orange and yellow fish fell to the ground spilling it's contents over the owner. "Shit. Fuck..."

"Who are you?" Jade asked the foul mouthed occupant. A strange sense of connection stopping her from blasting the person into next week. Getting over the initial shock of what was in front of her the occupant laughed.

"That I think would be hard to explain. Check out my PC and you might get a glimpse."

Jade looked across and saw the tiny shining image of the Blue Dwarf on a website.

"What?" Jade was bewildered and just looked at the person. Untidy brown hair that looked like it was impossible to tame and green eyes. Taller than herself though.

"Mind if I sit down? Got a blister walking on Saturday and only made it worse being hot at work." She moved over to sit down anyway.

"Sure." Jade stepped aside. "Is this what white Wolf was talking about? Are you..."

"Don't think about it too hard. It'll screw you up. I can write in you forgetting if you like? Might work, never actually dealt with Dimension Zero stuff. Only in Edd's Bleeding Edge game."

"Who?" It was remarkably easy to talk with this person. Almost like talking to yourself.

"A friend. No matter." The brown haired woman smiled at Jade. "This is a bit weird."

"So can you tell me where we are going next? It's not cold and damp is it? I really am fed up with cold and damp. Is Alex going to be OK? It's just..."

"I know... Really, I'd like to say yes, but it's just not my call. I don't know what he has planned. Although I'd watch Lo... I mean Cass. He's got something planned. And Jaxx has been crazy dangerous in the past"

"He?" Jade said, latching onto the fact that Cass had been referred to as a man.

"Shit... I really shouldn't say stuff like that should I?" she laughed. Oddly not phased by the experience.

"Considering what White Wolf said. Assuming you are me from another universe. Or... something... Then you are quite foul mouthed."

"Yeah, it's a bad habit. Makes writing you more difficult. A nice challenge."

"A challenge?!" Jade burst, her mind not fully taking in everything.

"Oh. You're fading. I guess that the jump is nearly over. Nice to meet you Doctor Black. You might need this." She handed the doctor a tube of sun tan lotion.

"Nice to meet you too... I think... I didn't catch your name?" The woman laughed again.

"You can call me Amy."

Her head throbbed. The weird dream buzzed around her head like a half forgotten memory. She pushed it aside as 'dimensional weirdness' and sat up. It was sandy and dark, warm and stuff beyond compare. Looking about for the others she saw nothing. Feeling along a bit she came to the edge of a stone surface. Half way up was a button, pressing it, turned on some kind of futuristic lighting, the stones themselves in various places glowing.

It lit up a room that was windowed on one side, the shutters also sliding back as Jade watched. Her crew mates were on the floor, unconscious, some beginning to stir.

Looking out of the window, Jade saw an endless expanse of desert, broken only by the immense construction work of a large pyramid. Slaves used anti-grav sleds and were ordered about by men wielding armour shaped like falcons and what could either be a jackal or a wolf amongst other designs.

"Where on earth are we?" She looked down at her hand. In it was a tube of suntan lotion she was sure she didn't pack, but couldn't quite recall where it came from.
