Let Sleeping Babes Lie

“Do not harass the dead in their own domain, you rattlebrained child.” Cali scolded Luna in a hushed tone. “Every witless remark you make to these guardians of our path ahead will make our descent that much more difficult. And we still must make it out of this place afterwards. Could you not go stand in the back with Majvok the Two faced Craven?”

Cali looked back as their small party gathered close to the gate. She peered into the sea of dead looking for the faces of the eternal sisters, but they were gone. Cali turned to the old crone and moved closer.

“Aged one, won’t you pull back the swaddling cloth and show us your babe?” Caligari was all too aware that she too was an old woman, but perhaps it would help in this instance. She really did not want to see what was hidden inside those blankets. It was sure to sicken or sadden; a gruesome babe to disgust the eyes or a pristine child to sadden the heart. Either would be dead from the world, but down in the depths of this realm the dead were free to enact their revenge on whomever dared to pass. It was bad fortune or Heimdall’s presence that had let them get this far unscathed. Things only got worse the deeper you went.
