SciWorld 2020 Style. Thank you.

What a fantastic celebration SciWorld 2020 was! It was outstanding from start to finish with excellent discussions and really, really fun trivia games. We’re all obviously in a situation wholly unfamiliar to us: the novel coronavirus pandemic and everything that it affects. However, SciWorld helped us break through that barrier and connect with each other just like we always have.

Why You Should Attend SciWorld Tomorrow

That’s right: SciWorld 2020 is tomorrow, Saturday, April 18th.  Join us then at 1730 UTC / 1:30 PM EDT (New York) / 10:30 AM PDT (San Francisco) for the Opening Ceremony. Josh of TNU Project and the rest of the event hosts have a fantastic line-up ready for us.

It doesn’t matter if you’re into Star Trek, Star Wars, Dr. Who, or something else entirely.  Or if you prefer chat sims, play by e-mail, or message boards.  If you’re a simmer or online role player of any persuasion, there will be something there for you!  But what do you really get out of SciWorld?  Here are 4 reasons you should attend:

  1. You’ll get to rub elbows with many prominent members of our community.  In fact, some of the most successful and influential role players and simming leaders in history will be attending and facilitating events.  Learn from the best!
  2. You’ll hear about the latest and most innovative techniques and strategies for leading a successful role play.  Indeed, there will be multiple events dedicated to running better games.  Discover what’s working for others now!
  3. You’ll be able to role play with others from different clubs and genres.  With a diverse set of hosts and settings, you’ll experience a wide range of concepts and ideas.  Challenge the simming norms and help break barriers!
  4. You’ll have fun!  All simmers and online role players, regardless of rank or club affiliation, are invited to attend and participate.  There’s no way to energize your sim than to come back with a fresh perspective.

As always, if you would like to host a one-hour discussion, trivia, or sim and there’s still space in the schedule, please contact Josh immediately at jhina [at] tnuproject [dot] org with “SciWorld” in the subject line.

See you tomorrow at SciWorld!

Coronavirus lockdown – time for creative writing with friends?

At the time I’m writing this, people around the world are staying indoors to prevent the spread of Covid-19. This lockdown period won’t last forever, but will mean you’re going to spend a lot of time indoors, & switching your favourite outdoor activities with indoor ones. If you have children, fret not because you can still have some fun in your backyard thanks to products like the best wooden playhouses for sale.

Maybe now is a good time to start writing that story you’ve always wanted to?

Independence Fleet: Star Trek Play-by-Post roleplaying

As David wrote a few months back in his advertising piece, Ongoing Worlds is open to publishing articles promoting the different clubs and groups out there.  A few examples are here, here, and here.  So why not shamelessly plug my own group?

I ended my term as President of UCIP last August.  Man, what a great group of role players!  If you’re into some serious writing and simming, you can’t go wrong with them.  However, as much as I love and respect UCIP, I was recently given the opportunity to finally return to my home club, Independence Fleet (IDFleet.com).  It was simply too much to pass up.  Yes, I’m back with IDF for my second stint as its Chief of Fleet Operations.

20 Years of Sunfire Script

Utopia Fleet

For as long as I can remember, I’ve heard people say, “I’ve been simming for 20 years.” Well, I can finally say it myself.

I’ve been simming for 20 years.

Wow, that felt good!

On February 16, 2000, the USS Sunfire NCC-3935, a Bedford class starship, launched in old Utopia Fleet’s Deep Space Exploration Division.  I was the ship’s CMO.  That’s Chief Medical Officer for all you non-Trek role players.  Fast forward to today and it’s hard to image my life without play-by-post role playing.

I’ve been a writer, a politician, a diplomat, a founder, an editor, a counselor, an investigator, a philosopher, a Captain, an Admiral, and even a game show host–all of which are never going to happen IRL (that’s In Real Life for you non-simmers).  Role playing’s taught me a lot about people, life, and myself.  All in all, it’s been a fun ride.

Simming Get Together IRL 2021

How would you like to meet other role players IRL? IRL stands for In Real Life, by the way. We do a lot together online–write stories, attend conventions, and generally hang out. What would it be like to meet outside of the Internet?

Let’s find out! We’re tentatively planning to host a convention or rally sometime in 2021. That’s literally all we know right now: it’ll be in 2021! If you’re interested, click on the link below and fill out the form.

That’s it!
